Is it just me or is anyone else sick of the Olympics already....
I am also a little put off by the jingoistic manner in which the games are advertised....

It's as if the infantile black and white world of the Bush Junta has spilled over into the Sporting Life...

Snow Boarding...

Did American Olympic elites push to get this American Sport added to the winter games just so we could grab some gold.....

Honestly, with all the stop cut filming, rock-n-roll soundtracks and the weird outfits, is it really a sport or a created event to let false American Pride shine through....

Especially with all that is going wrong for America around the world....

Why do they have to ruin sports events with that crap? :puke:

Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 10:58 AM by supernova
But I haven't been watching NBC.

For me, somebody doing live streaming over the web, like AOL did with Live 8 would be the best way for me to enjoy the Olympics. That way I don't have to see all the annoying commercials and I can look at the sports I'm interested in.

Edit: I'm not much of a sports fan anyway. But those sports I DO enjoy tend to be the individual sports that make up the Olympics. You know, more or less competing against yourself, bettering your last performance, as much as against someone else. I'm just not much of a team sport person.

Get to know the pretty ones on a first name basis! Feel your heart swell with pride that we're "better than ever"!.

Can't wait.....to miss it.

With the exception of "Scrubs', 'The Office' and 'My Name is Earl' I don't watch NBC that much. Looks like I'll be watching much less during the next month.

6. I became sick of them when "dream teams" of pro athletes were allowed.
What amazes me is when the US men's basketball team was comprised of NBA all-stars, and it was a newsworthy triumph whenever they won over a team like Romania or Swaziland.

Yeah, what an upset. :eyes:

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten those were on......

I watch so little mainstream TV, that I'd nearly missed them.....

We used to watch them religiously, but no more......

Now nearly all the mainstream TV I see is on the big sets at my gym!

I'll look for it when I go later on this morning.....

14. There is nothing to watch on NBC.....
Except for a few shows, but they put the commercials all over them....

After one time, the commercials aree stuck in my head....

I helped make a few political commercials a few years back so I notice stuff, trends, who they are targeting with the ads....

The BIG wins don't always go to Americans. Not to wish ill on the individual athletes, but . . . Oh, I don't know how to articulate what I mean.

Like Jesse Owens, yes . . . good thing the Games aren't being held here. We've had them here too frequently lately. Lake Placid, Los Angeles, Atlanta, there was another one, I think . . . ugh.

31. Our neighbors to the north kick ass at snowboarding
I just finished watching the winter X games last week. Lots of snowboarding participants from all over the world. Very good ones too. I imagine a lot of the X Gamers also compete in the olympics. I'm a big fan of the winter games, so I'm not sick of it. I watch it for the sport, and I'll root for various individuals from any country. National pride is not a factor.

33. I can't wait for Curling
and I love the Olympics. They aren't what they used to be (or, more accurately I suppose, what they used to seem to be), but I still like to watch them, and with the winter olympics you get to see some great athletes who get almost no recognition outside of this event.

The media hype does get on my nerves, but hopefully with all the NBC cable programming we'll still be able to see some of the non-rockstar events.

Too often, American athletes get their way in post-event officiating controversies, just on account of all the money the U.S. gives to the international Olympic committee. I hate when that happens.

41. My disdain for the Olympics began in 1968
when the IOC banned Tommie Smith and John Carlos from competition for giving the "black power" salute during the medal ceremony for the 200-meter dash.

It got worse in 1976 when the Russians politicized the Games by boycotting them, then again in 1980 when the U.S. returned the favor under Carter.

The last Olympics I watched were the L.A. Games in 1984. The jingoism sickened me.

I so wish Americans understood the quality of grace.

43. You've got the Soviet boycott reversed
The U.S. boycotted first, the 1980 Games in Moscow to protest a Soviet invasion. Then Russia followed suit by boycotting the '84 Games in Los Angeles. Just a few Eastern European countries, including Romania which became a huge favorite with the fans, refused to go along with the Russian boycott and attended the LA Games.

I love the Olympics and will watch virtually every minute. I've attended many of them including Salt Lake City in 2002. The Olympics make every other sporting event other than perhaps the World Cup look like a backyard pickup game. But I'm sure we'll be treated to many more "who cares about the Olympics?" threads. May I ask why they are treated as something new and provocative? Just copy and paste them from year to year. The words and the themes never vary.
