 Denis Leary used to joke that on quiet, still winter nights, you could stand outside in Wisconsin and hear the sound of thousands of ice skates being sharpened north of the border in preparation for a cheese-seizing invasion.
I grew up in Eastern Canada, so my monay is on the Great White North. Especially if the U.S. freaks and Mother Russia feels compelled to protect her interests by flying everything she's got over the North Pole, which last time I checked is about 30 meters from Canada.

I happen to have known a couple who moved here. |
|
I've had some pretty angry words with them. I am mostly joking about my own personal experiences, not necessarily painting all of Michigan with the same brush. Engineering types tend to be on the conservative side (in addition to the natural arrogance most engineers have), while engineering types from the UP…

Engineers all. Mostly conservative, and yes arrogant, but also pretty kind people as well. I know some conservative nutjobs here too, people with whom I just cannot be left alone with for fear something bad will happen. I was just curious what your experience was that prompted that comment.

That's a Dilbert quote, but sadly it's all too often true. Combine that with a conservative mindset, and the result is nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying.

up in the Northern lower peninsula too. Not to be too judgmental or generalize, but the redneck stereotype is not just for people down south you know. Usually from what I have seen people on the shores are pretty upper class kind of right wingers.

The Super bowl will be shown live on German Public Television.
The late hour aside (3-ish IIRC), I just can't imagine the event will work well with zero commercials, as required by the rules for public broadcasts. And add the total absence of any qualified commentator.

28. I always hoped American football would catch on with Germans. |
|
Baseball is popular with east Asians and central Americans because it looks simple on the surface and has a lot of subtlety to it once you understand it.
I always figured American football would some day be popular with Russians, Germans and Arabs because all of the complexity is right on the surface and can be intimidating to people unfamiliar with it.

…does anyone else remember the first time American stations started showing the World Cup? The commentators were so horrible I started watching the Spanish language channels despite the fact that I don't speak a word of Spanish.
I still remember "Uh… he's… kicking the ball." The fact that he wasn't fired on the spot says a lot about American sports journalism. *shudder*

For starters the pro sport is disconnected from the pasttime level players. With soccer both are basically the same: same club, same uniform, different league. The NFL teams are artificial, commercial entities; they're even using American players for their European subsidiaries.
Then, with the NFL as a monolithic organization, there is not the international spirit that a sport needs to be "big". There is no way for a local club to get pegged against a big-shot - especially not for a European club. But that's an essential part in league-based sports.
Then, it is too slow - nothing ever happens . For comparison, soccer is a living, entertaining sport where something happens all the time. No time for commercials, every second counts; yet it is more startegic than Basketball and without the inflation of "score" scenes. American Football is too slow and dry.
I could see rugby gaining more support, though.

I guess I never realized.
ON EDIT: I looked at a map. Wow, I had no idea. I mean, I knew the border was nearby, but I guess I just had never actually looked at a map of Detroit and seen the border runs right through the city basically.
