I give the British Monarchy another 20 years, tops. |
|
Regardless of international events, I think Charles and one of his sons will be the last Kings of England.
Good riddance, I say.

1. It will be interesting when the Queen finally abdicates or dies |
|
Few have any real complaint while she is on the throne, since she is so good at her job. But Charles, hmm that's another matter...

2. I dunno - I think people really like William and Harry... |
|
If Charles isn't king and it goes straight to William or Harry the monarchy might limp along for a while yet, depending on their heirs.

3. At what point did the monarchy become powerless? |
|
Any British History buffs here who can inform me? I know their power was gradually reduced over centuries by a number of events like the Magna Carta and Civil War. When in modern history did the monarch become a figurehead?

9. If I recall from the last time I studied about the Brits |
|
The last king with any real power died in 1837, and was succeeded by Victoria, who was a figurehead.

4. Last great welfare recipients |

I agree. I don't see Charles being king, though. Probably one of the boys will be the last. The British are fed up with them IMHO.

If Brits want to support a royal family, then great.
If they don't want to, then great.
I really don't care either way.

6. The King or Queen is the Head of State |
|
I don't know exactly what else a British monarch actually does beyond that.
I think some people see the Monarchy as reassuring...tradition, continuity.
I'm not sure there's a consensus to abolish the monarchy right now. Or in 20 years.

7. Well, England's population is becoming far more diverse. |
|
And many new Britons are former residents of the "Colonies". There are quite a few who see the Monarchy for what it is; a welfare scam, keeping poor people poor, and exploiting the world's resources for a handful of family members and cronies.
Hard-core "Monarchists" are dying off. The new generation identify more with the cast of Friends than with the Royal Family.
Plus, now more than ever, the world is more "global". The Monarchy has less and less function.
Wm and Harry are "press darlings", which makes most people who read Britain's appaling newspapers unthinking Monarchists.
But the more they do stupid things like wear SS uniforms to parties and fool around with "loose" girls, the less endearing they become.
