Poll question: Did Detroit's music scene get royally dissed by Super Bowl XL? |
|
Think about it. Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, Madonna, Eminem, Richie Hawtin, and all of the seminal Detroit techno acts - not to mention the entire Motown universe.
What the hell?!? No matter how good the Rolling Stones are, was the Detroit music scene totally slapped in the face by Super Bowl organizers?

Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, the list goes on and on. There are so many excellent musicians from this area. There was no need to outsource for American talent for a traditional American Holiday. I love the Stones but there is no excuse.

2. They had McCartney last year. Had to try and top it with the Stones. |
|
Or at least keep in on a par with last year.
Myself, I would much rather have seen Aretha or any one of the Motown groups up there.

6. Pardon me, but what Motor City music scene? |
|
I'm unaware of anything to come out of Detroit that could be classed as listenable, danceable music for oh, say the last 30 years.
I know, I'm a heretic. I don't recognize the genius of rap or the incredible musicality of a 4-4 bass beat repeated over and over for 12 minutes.

|
superbowl is as far as I know. I wouldn't have never had the thought enter my mind for a second that it was a slap in Detroit's face until I read this poll. They just picked the band they thought would have the most buzz for the national audience. Nothing more than that in my opinion.

10. Good point, but it's just an observation... |
|
I think American culture is in constant danger of being homogenized. There's no on in particular to blame for it. But I do think there's still room for regional pride to showcase itself within the American arts framework.

I think they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Maybe you should listen to the new Stones CD and check out the song Sweet Neo-Con and then tell everyone how outdated and grandpa-ish they seem. I only wish they could play that song today in front of millions of Americans in our free speech society. And oh by the way I am a grandpa. Long Live Rock.

And I'm sick of ageism. I'm 53 and I look like I'm in early thirties (thankfully), and I behave like a teenager. I'm always amazed when people discover my real age and they start treating me like a fucking fossil. What's really fun, though, is that I occasionally get carded, especially when entering a place with low lighting. My friends gag.

Eminem? :puke: I grew up with Motown music, but there's been a dearth of good music coming from there lately.

13. No. The superbowl is broadcast around the world, not just Detroit.. |
|
so, the Motown issue is a non-starter with me. I don't see a damn thing wrong with having the Rolling Stones perform. IMO, it's a good thing that is likely to draw viewers who wouldn't normally watch.

20. stevie wonder and Aretha Franklin are both performing at the super bowl |
|
Stevie Wonder is performing during the pregame show and Aretha (dueting with Aaron Neville) is singing the National Anthem. So, to the extent the organizers fucked up by ignoring motown initially, they've taken steps to correct that.

I heard that they were originally planning on doing a Motown Spectacular type-thing. However, the organizers of the half-time show have always wanted to get either Prince or The Stones to do the halftime show; when they found out they could actually get the Stones, they cancelled the Motown Spectacular.

I agree with you... the organizers really messed up... Detriot and Michigan in general have a rich culture of music. They should have promoted the city and state by focusing on this amazing history.
It would be like going to New Orleans and not recognizing their local culture and music history.
That is my humble opinion...
