Man my computer sucks!!!
It keeps freezing up for a few seconds. It does it every few minutes. While it is frozen all sound stops as well. If I continue typing while it is frozen, the characters all appear at once once it carries on, so interrupts do seem to be continuing (sorry, tech stuff).

I have no idea what's wrong, and it's really annoying me. x(

1. I had this problem once, and it was one of the programs I had installed.
I would create a file called "picklist.deref.out" which would slow my computer down and I would have to delete it and clear my recycle bin...continuously, until the company that put out the program came up with a patch.

sorry, that's about as techie as I can talk. ;)

3. Check integrity of RAM - reseat it. Also check power supply...
a faulty power supply will lead to crashes.

Might also be the hard drive, but I'd check the RAM and power supply first.

5. I can soak test the RAM tonight
I have a utility for that. The PSU - dammit, there it went again - should be okay because it's new and I specifically bought a good one. At least, if it is at fault, I will certainly be demanding a replacement. I don't know how to test the hard drive?

17. Ever use RAMtest86 ?
Great way to torture test RAM outside of an OS environment. It creats a bootable floppy that does nothing but test RAM, no operating system is loaded other than just a set of instructions to test RAM. It's a great way to eliminate all other influences and test the memory completely.

19. I used to have problems with never being able to re-use those floppies
It was weird, Windows would NEVER recognize those floppies again after I'd used them for memtest, it simply couldn't format them. It was weird.

4. Mine was acting a little strange earlier.
The screen was rolling like TVs used to do.

I rebooted and everything seems to be okay at the moment.

:hi:

7. I have AOL (and please do not flame with comments like AOL Hell, etc.)
and every time an e-mail comes in, my computer freezes up. It's annoying, especially when I'm playing a game, posting here or composing an e-mail

12. Does the problem persist when you quit X-windows?
Do you have too many servers / daemons running in the background?

13. I haven't noticed that it does
although I boot into runlevel 4 by default anyway (in Slackware that means X logon).

I think I disabled all the daemons bar the ones I need, so no mail or web server, just print, ssh and sftp services and the usual stuff.

14. When is the last time you cleaned your cookies, cleaned your discs,
ran your disc defragmenter and did a AVG anti virus scan?

15. Respectively: never, several months ago, never and never
Linux filesystems don't require defragmenting and almost no Linux user has an antivirus program. But thanks! :hi:

16. Must have been manufactured by Electrolux.
As they say, nothing sucks like an Electrolux :)

In all seriousness sounds like a software or driver conflict. When did this start? If all else fails, and assuming it's a Microsoft Windows system (just remember Microsoft == Electrolux in the suckiness stakes) a complete wipe-clean and re-install might well cure the problem. Just remember to work through the freezes and do a backup of crucial data first.

Mark.

20. That's the strange thing
It started a few weeks ago, when a friend was staying with me. But it can't be that he installed some nasty software he shouldn't have done, because (a) he wouldn't know how to, and (b) he didn't have the root password (it's a Linux machine you see).

Without the root password, I don't see what he could have done to screw up the system.
