1. Have your gynecologist call and tell you you're pregnant. |

Breathe in as much as you can to fill your lungs and hold it as long as you can.

8. Actually it "resets" the diaphragm |
|
It's the same as all other "cures" but not as cute. Drinking a lot of water builds up just as much carbon dioxide.

14. Much like a yoga trick I learned years ago |
|
Either take a deep breath and hold it while taking three individual sips of water and swallowing each, then letting your breath back out. Or you can exhale completely and do the same. Either way works every time.
Even taught my SpEd students this nifty little trick...worked like charm each time.
But if you hiccup in the middle of doing this, you have to start over.
And it is about "resetting" the diaphragm. Hiccups are the diaphragm spasming.

15. I like your trick, too. I never really thought about the "re-setting" |
|
of the diaphragm aspect. Hmmm...interesting.
Have you ever heard that when you hiccup your heart stops a beat? I remember hearing that somewhere, but I don't know if it's medically true or not.
Interestingly, my 9 yr old dtr used to get hiccups in utero all the time when I was pregnant with her. To this day, she STILL gets bouts of them, once in a while. It's funny.

18. Baby in utero getting hiccups |
|
My son did that a lot, too. Would try to find his back through my belly and give him a back rub. Usually helped.
I bet you could teach your 9-year old the reset trick for hiccups
Don't know anything re: hiccups and heart skipping a beat. But, there's lots of info that chronic hiccups, or hiccups lasting a long time can be indicative of an underlying health problem. (Just did a couple of Google searches out of curiosity.)

5. Dopey cure, but it works for me. |
|
Put your fingers in your ears. Have someone else hold a glass of water to your lips; drink several sips.
That's all. Don't forget to take your fingers out of your ears.

16. That is exactly how you do it. |
|
Push in your ears real hard, and have some give you a glass of water to drink from. Guzzle a half of a glass. Works every time.

For me, anyway. Get a big glass of water, pinch your nose shut and start drinking. Keep drinking until you feel like you're going to drown. This reirritates your diaphragm, kicking it back into normalcy.

19. You swallow a spoonful of dry granular sugar, but you don't let it dissolve |
|
in your mouth.
The dry granules irritating your throat are what makes it work.

21. Swallow a spoonful of sugar, that is an effective method. |
|
Another technique, which someone taught me to do, as I tend to get hiccups often:
Concentrate on your diaphragm. That's the culprit. Just focus on it. That's all. Think about it calming down, remaining steady. Focus. Breathe steadily, a little more deeply than usual.
I don't know why, but it always works for me, and quickly. Give it a try. This technique is especially good if you get hiccups in public where you can't use a standard remedy.
