Going to Canada
I know that beginning in 2008, we will need passports to cross from Canada to the US but I have also heard that starting now, we need passports to go from the US to Canada.

Has anyone heard or experienced this. I need Cuban Cigars and plan to make a trip to Montreal in the Spring.

Merci

5. Maybe it depends on the port, then
I went to Quebec City 3 years ago, and I had to have a passport. I was also there for a week, maybe that's an issue too...

I go through the border crossing in Detroit. I've never had to use anything but a birth certificate and driver's license.

It could be different for other destinations.

14. It hasn't been that way for years
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada may be required to present proof of citizenship and identity. U.S. citizens are encouraged to show a U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid U.S. passport.

10. You have to be alert for US Customs though
As I understand it, it is illegal to bring Cuban cigars into the US

12. Not yet.
They are phasing in the passport requirement and current plans are that by the end of this year passports will be required when traveling by air. Ground passage won't require passports until the end of 2007.

I do know from friends that certain crossing points have nasty little tyrants who treat you differently if you present only an ID and birth certificate. One friend gets grilled every time at Toronto airport because her surname isn't the same as her spouse's. Apparently that's terrorist behavior now.

13. I cross the Cdn USA border frequently with
my husband. I'm Canadian, he is American. He NEVER has been asked for a passport. Birth Certificate and picture ID is all he ever needed.
I understand that will change though.
