What Musical Artists Sound Considerably Better Live Than On Record?
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 05:19 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
I'm ridiculously bored, so I figured I'd throw this out:

Okay, so every artist SHOULD sound better live, but we all know there are some artists you should hear live or really not at all.

I'll start with Phil Collins. I know many of y'all don't like him very much--:D ;)--but the live compilation I have of him is MUCH (x100) better-sounding than most, if not all, of his studio albums. On his studio albums the production tends to make him sound rather slick and "tinny," without any considerable fiber to his music. I was pleasantly suprised to hear how much "rawer" ("more raw"?) he sounds live.

What others can y'all think of?

WIMR

1. George Thurogood.
He's incredible in concert. He has some decent studio recordings but he's 1,000 times better live.

4. NP...You've probably heard some of his songs
maybe on a bar room juke box. Bad to the Bone, I Drink Alone, One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer.

3. Pink Floyd
The kids were complaining I had the radio turned up too loud in the next room. I was at the concert five miles away. The University was tracking it on a seismograph.

28. I've seen Pink Floyd only on video
— the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" video — but even then it's the most mesmerizing performance I can imagine.

I'd actually be a little bit scared to see them live. I dunno if my senses could take it. It'd be kinda like an orgasm 1,000 times more intense than any I've ever had.

6. I have seen him, he is a monster drummer!
Peter Gabriel has a lot of energy live. Sarah McLachlan has a helluva voice. Some folks sound shitty live, but good in the studio, she is great everywhere.

I would like to see Annie Lennox live,

9. The drumming on the live version of "In The Air Tonight"
that I have is really, really good, even better than the drums on the studio version, which are excellent as it is. I just respect Collins because he IS an actual musician, not a pretty face with some techno-geeks twisting his music to make it sound good, and he does good things for charities, etc.

16. He is one of my favorites.
I like his earlier stuff more, though, before about 95. His work with Genesis was always pretty solid.

I generally like the British acts more than American because they seem to put a higher value on musicianship. A few weeks ago here, "My Humps" was number one. Most of the top 10 songs won't be heard a year from now, where as with the British acts, or the actual American musicians, the songs seem to stick longer.

17. That is all absolutely true.
I don't know what it is with the Brits, but they really can kick some American ass when it comes to good, quality musicianship. Not that there aren't good American acts, but STILL...

:D :D

27. I think Americans now are too hyped on Maria Carey types
Loopy, screaming, empty vocals with no musicianship. There are probably some great bands that get buried under the shit they play on the radio.

I need to get Sirius or XM, because most radio plays the same songs every 45 minutes. It is pitiful.

8. Jewel
Her first album was partly live and is probably the only one that captures her real talent, imo. I've heard some great live recording and been to a couple shows where she rocks out and does some amazing stuff. Her last three albums haven't lived up to that.

10. Most of 'em do, I think.
Not the Who, but how could anyone sound better than Who's Next?

Not Tull, usually, but their '96 show downtown had wonderful sound.

Yes, Kiss, Sarah McLachlan--all better live.

13. I think most pop performers sound better in the studio.
The studio will forgive all kinds of sins, "sweeten" the sound, and allow for lots of punched-in corrections and alternate tracks, while the reality of the live performance shows how hard it is to play and sing in tune, especially if you're a pop star. Of course there's going to be more energy in a live concert, but that's when the warts come out.

21. Oh, wait... There was also Dizzy Gillespie!
He was great... If I may make a broad unfounded generalization.

It would seem the best part of brass is lost with paper speakers.

Aside: Dizzy G. shook my hand in a green room once... Said I was a "Good Kid."

It was one of those strange occurrences in life only rarely mentioned.

I was the only one there he even talked to and I was there by happenstance.

One of my "Forrest Gump" moments.

*faints as well*

18. I actually prefer when they sound close to their original music
Versus a bunch of "YEEEEAAAAAH! WOOOOOHOOOOOHOOOOO! UH-HUH! UH-HUH!
I saw Grand Funk Railroad about six years ago and they sounded just like they did on their albums 30 years ago.
