Dent is probably the best name of all time.

Rock Cartwright is another. I am partial to Redskins, like Thrash.

Boss Bailey is a LB for Detroit, he is Champ's brother. Both cool names.

27. Not really
Frazier was known as a stud dresser, and in the late '60s-early '70s he sported a '30s gangster look reminiscent of Warren Beatty in the 1967 film "Bonnie and Clyde."

I understand he played a little basketball, too.

32. The ABA happened to it
That league didn't last long, but it was wide-open compared to the NBA, and it didn't take long for fans to fall in love with guys like Julius Erving with his two-foot-wide 'fro dunking from the foul line with that red, white and blue ball. When the ABA folded and the NBA absorbed its players, they brought that style with them, and the owners weren't about to crack the golden egg.

Anyway, I think I'd take DeBusschere and Willis Reed for my must-win-one-game team. That night in 1970 when Reed limped onto the court about two minutes before the start of game seven against the Lakers, I got the feeling it was all over. He and DeBusschere were gamers.

whoops. wrong sport. those are real guys, though.

There is a famous baseball photo that shows Henry "Zeke" Bonura leaving the field, his jersey in tatters after a huge brawl.
he is essentially naked to the waist except for a few threads still intact. His face looks like hamburger.
Slaughter is supposed to have been a terrible racist bigot.
Anyway....my dad was at the game where that photo was taken.....

53. Chris Hanburger and Dave Butz with the Washington Redskins
Hanburger I believe was a member of the famed "over-the-hill" gang that was so popular in the early 1970s. "Hanburger" (the play-by-play guys pronounced it "hamburger") is a great football name, as is "Butz". Butz I think was in the defensive line and had a giant butt, in fact. I think he played just a couple of years after the "over-the-hill" gang had its great moments, but I'm not sure.

Fair Hooker had a great name but a very weird one. He was a star on the Cleveland Browns in the late 60's and early 70's and a pretty good wide receiver. It probably took a lot of guts to go through life with the name of "Fair Hooker" with all the kidding he must have had in the locker room.

66. What's up with calling the kid "Fair", sheesh. He could've played it off
if they'd named him "Brian" or "Scott" or something. But every kid in every class he ever had (until he was in high school and big enough to stomp people) would have to at least supress a giggle or snort every time his name was called.

Chris Hanburger was a part of the "future is now" "over the hill" Redskins from the 70's (Sonny Jurgensen etc.) I don't know if it's still there but he had a Ford dealership, I still remember the TV and radio jingle which your post has unfortunately implanted in my brain again...

"It's Chris HANburger, Chris HANburger, Chris HANburger FORDDDD!"

70. Rams Quaterback Roman Gabriel is another strange name
Who would name their kid "Roman" as a first name?

Another guy who had an unforgettable name but never made it to the pros was Washington Huskies quarterback Sonny Sixkiller. Sixkiller was a tremendous force in college football, named an All-American, completely turning the Huskies football team around, passing in back-to-back 300+ yard games and making the cover of Sports Illustrated. But he wasn't even drafted to the pros, I don't think. In fact, I remember hearing that he was having trouble just getting teams to give him a try-out after he graduated. He WAS a bit small for a pro quarterback, but then Fran Tarkenton wasn't a giant, either. Of course Sonny Sixkiller was a full-blooded Native American and very dark-complected. I hope that didn't have anything to do with it. I remember James Harris, the first black quarterback to start in the NFL who played just after the Sonny Sixkiller era. Harris was a major star at Grambling but when he was drafted into the pros, the teams trying to draft him were asking him to switch positions as a condition to being drafted. And when Harris started with the L.A. Rams in the mid-1970s, there actually was a very heated controversy in the city, with many fans threatening to boycott the team if Harris started. There was a great deal of racism back then and many white fans didn't feel that a black quarterback would be smart enough to lead a team on the field. I don't know if that factored in as the reason why Sonny Sixkiller was barely given a look by pro NFL teams and not even drafted. I remember seeing Sixkiller play on TV in college and he was absolutely magnetic and exciting to watch, a scrambler and risk-taker who had a rifle arm.
