Lyndon Johnson -Johnson paid an official visit and met with Prime Minister Harold Holt Holt was one of LBJ's strongest supporters in the international sphere and was an enthusiastic advocate of America's role in Vietnam. The opposition Labor Party, by contrast, wanted Australian forces out of Vietnam. So Johnson timed his visit to coincide with Holt's re-election campaign and it was widely interpreted as being a blatant ploy to boost Holt's electoral popularity. Holt would probably have won anyway (the leader of the Labor Party at the time was an electoral liability rather than an asset) but nevertheless Johnson's role did play a role in boosting Holt and he won the 1966 election in an unprecedented landslide. The Labor Party never forgave Johnson for his perceived role in boosting Holt's popularity and, a few years later, at least one Labor politician went to the US to assist in the campaign against Johnson during the early stages of the 1968 presidential election

Whitlam also annoyed Nixon (and subsequently Ford) by publicly revealing that the US had an (up till then) secret military facility in Australia and also undermining CIA covert operations by disclosing that there were CIA agents in the country. Whitlam was actually much more pro-American than he was made out to be but he irritated Nixon to such an extent that he got a very cool reception when he went to Washington to meet Nixon and was not granted a state dinner.
