I think it was a compromise between the names Shipman and Solomon. So they just gave him the middle name S.

22. A friend of mine and i were wondering years back about the "J"
in "J. Edgar Hoover."

I thought it stood for "Jowls." But my friend retorted with perhaps the funniest thing I've veer heard; he said "No, when he was born, his mother said to his father: 'Jesus, Edgar, he looks just like a vacuum cleaner!'"

Maybe you hadda be there. But I chuckle still when I remember that conversation.

24. John
He went to the "J. Edgar" bit either in high school or his freshman year of college. Only his mother was ever permitted to call him "Johnny."

In his memoirs, he claimed "Speed" as a nickname in his teens and 20s.

34. O.K. The correct answer is . . .
. . . Robert Todd Lincoln.

He was invited to accompany both Presidents at their invitations. Lincoln was at Union Station with President Garfield when he was shot. He was also at President McKinley's side when McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, New York.

What's the moral of the story? Don't hang around with Robert Todd Lincoln!

(A little Poli-Sci humor there. ;))

133. My apologies -the answers to the questions
You can get the information about which presidents have visited Australia here
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/trvl/pres/dest/ac/12443.htm
1966
Lyndon Johnson -Johnson paid an official visit and met with Prime Minister Harold Holt Holt was one of LBJ's strongest supporters in the international sphere and was an enthusiastic advocate of America's role in Vietnam. The opposition Labor Party, by contrast, wanted Australian forces out of Vietnam. So Johnson timed his visit to coincide with Holt's re-election campaign and it was widely interpreted as being a blatant ploy to boost Holt's electoral popularity. Holt would probably have won anyway (the leader of the Labor Party at the time was an electoral liability rather than an asset) but nevertheless Johnson's role did play a role in boosting Holt and he won the 1966 election in an unprecedented landslide. The Labor Party never forgave Johnson for his perceived role in boosting Holt's popularity and, a few years later, at least one Labor politician went to the US to assist in the campaign against Johnson during the early stages of the 1968 presidential election

George Bush Sr

1996
Bill Clinton -Clinton was a hit over here. He drew huge crowds in Sydney and he delivered an impassioned speech promoting racial tolerance (which was a big issue at the time because a far right Member of Parliament was stirring up racial tensions and our Prime Minister was busy pandering to her). Our Prime Minister was standing next to Clinton when he made the speech and the audience booed our PM while cheering Clinton

But fortunately I was out of the country then. In fact it was a double bonus for me because I managed to miss his visit to Australia and the local media saturation from the coverage of his visit and also because I was visiting Washington DC at the time and so therefore succeeded in visiting the national capital with him being far away from it

The answer to the second question is Richard Nixon and the Prime Minister he did it to was Gough Whitlam. Whitlam was elected as the first Labor Prime Minister in Australia in over two decades and had criticized the US role in Vietnam (and some of his ministers were on the public record as stating that Nixon was a "baby killer"). Whitlam also annoyed Nixon (and subsequently Ford) by publicly revealing that the US had an (up till then) secret military facility in Australia and also undermining CIA covert operations by disclosing that there were CIA agents in the country. Whitlam was actually much more pro-American than he was made out to be but he irritated Nixon to such an extent that he got a very cool reception when he went to Washington to meet Nixon and was not granted a state dinner. Some people contend that the CIA had a role in Whitlam's eventual downfall

Wow. I just skimmed the article and saw that the story was about my school. I should have payed closer attention to the title. I am an such an idiot for not noticing that. I'm so naive that I didn't think to stop and consider that someone would write an article from the perspective that changing the name of the school was a bad thing. Wow.

on edit:

I can't relay to you and this community how disappointed I am with myself for not reading that website before I linked to it. I want apologize to you and this community for my negligence. I am honestly disgusted by all this hatred in the world.

197. *Thomas Jefferson survives*, not knowing Jefferson had died earlier
that same day, July 4, 1826, 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
they both signed it, they both became presidents, they both died on the 50th anniversary.

what coincidence.

223. Which two Presidents each saw their VP die in their first year in office?
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 04:02 PM by ih8thegop
Hint: One of them served for two terms, the other served for one. The two-termer's first veep is the one to whom I'm referring.

This was long before Amendment XXV. Back then, if you lost your VP, you were veep-less for the rest of your term, and were not allowed to pick a new one unless you ran for re-election.
