Does NYC make anyone else feel claustrophobic?
I was just sending a PM to someone, and thinking about New York...and it suddenly occurred to me that NO other large city has ever made me feel as "odd" as NYC.

Anyone else?

1. I Heart NY
I never have felt claustrophobic here. I fell "odd" all the time, but that is me. I feel a bit odd everywhere I go.

What do you mean?

2. All the buildings and people
end up flipping me out--I feel like if I don't leave, I am going to start screaming.

I never felt that way in any other city, including Paris, London, and Mexico city.

16. I guess you either love it or hate it
I love London just as much, but it is a very different town. NY thrives on crowds in small spaces moving quickly. It makes me fell alive. I hate when I am gone.

I can see how some peole would hate it. The other big cities around the world either have more open spaces or don;t move as quickly.

3. Only when the trains really, really packed at rush hour
Otherwise, never.

And I'm kind of claustrophobic by nature.

6. Oh, it IS a great city!
I cannot understand what my problem is! There is just something about it...I cringe when I watch "Friends," even.

It's just some bizarre phobia, I think.

10. In all seriousness though, I do notice that i feel more "closed in"
in situations where Im not in the big city surrounded by tons of strangers, constant action and behemoths of buildings. Even in the "wide-open" i feel like I have less space then in my tiny-ass apartment

11. isn't that odd---I guess it's personal space we are talking about
I can't figure out why it's JUST NYC for me--no other city.

12. I can see how it would...
Manhattan's got far more skyscrapers per capita than anywhere else, so when you stand in the middle of downtown, there's nothing but skyscrapers as far as you can see in any direction. That certainly could play hell with a claustrophobic person. But not me. I love the concrete jungle. :)

13. Yes!
I escaped from the NYC area almost 20 years ago. I've been in large cities since then but none of them feel like New York.

:hi:

14. Nope.
Although I had to stop looking up. We've got some tall buildings in Houston, but I was acting like a hick from the sticks.

In Houston, downtown can be deserted at times. (They're trying to build it up, though.) In NYC, there are usually plenty of people on the streets. Besides the homeless ones.
