Am I a bastard for admitting I'd eat my dogs? |
|
I should explain. :)
Conversation with a co-worker about early mushing trips into really awful and cold parts of the world, some background history on native peoples and their sled dogs, how the beauty was in a real pinch you could eat the dogs and make hats and such out of them.
Guy's mouth drops.
"YOU wouldn't eat your sled dogs, would you?!?"
"Well, I can't imagine getting into that situation. But if I were, I would, and thank them for it."
(storms out)
So. Am I a complete bastard, or just an insensitive prick?

Would you eat "more conventional meat" like cow, chicken, pig, fish, or duck if it would save your life? I've never understood how one can be a vegan. To each his own.

2. I think many would. Some would not. Varies on your |

desire to survive and your attachment to the dogs and your personal ethics ...

3. I think if he was really desperate and needed to eat to survive |
|
He'd eat just about anything. He wouldnt know unless he is in the situation, but he can point and degrade others who either have been in the situation or who can think rational.
I dont think your either :)

4. The question is, would you eat them with relish? |

Sorry. It had to be said.
I just had a wonderful flashback to Jack London's "To Build a Fire."

6. Well, realistically in that situation |
|
If theres nothing for YOU to eat theres nothing for THEM to eat, so you'd all die ANYWAY

8. Hmm... I'd draw the line at making a hat out of my Precious... |

A broach is a completely different story, however.

Sometimes it's better to keep one's thoughts to one's self.:-)

Given the situation, I think many reasonable, non-prickish people would take that option.
Personally, I couldn't do it. But I don't think that necessarily makes you a prick, nor me noble/a pathetic schmoo. People are different. Differences are a good thing.

11. If you froze and they couldn't find food, they'd eat you, |

I belive that the scenes from New Orleans showed us this. They don't suffer from the non-realistic conundrum of anthropomorphizing humans. We are all just sacks of meat.

The ones bashing you for saying it, while expounding on how much they 'love' animals, would rather see your dogs die a horrible death of starvation (if you could head them off from eating each other...and you...first) and cold rather than see you give them a dignified death and go toward giving you a chance to continue to live.

16. You're an honest realist |
|
I would do the same. I'd do everything in my power not to get into that situation but I'd do it if I had to. Makes a lot more sense to me than dying together in mutual starvation.
If you killed one dog and shared it with the others, they would have no moral issue with eating their comrade.

Some Asian cultures still include dog as part of their diet.
If they can eat it as a regular food, I sure could if it was life and death.

20. As Jack Handey once said-- |

"If I were ever in a situation where I had to eat a dog to survive, I guess I would, but I would never eat a collie. I don't like the taste of collie."

i mean, i've never been in a situation where it's "eat my dogs or die", so i really can't say what I would do. But I bet I would take living first. Sure, I would feel like shit about it the rest of my life, but i'd still do it.
