Ok, I need to hear GOOD reasons why people hate J.J. Reddick
I think J.J. Redick is one of the best players in the game today and is one of the best shooters and scorers the game has ever seen. Let me preface this post by stating that my love for Duke Basketball is unrivaled. I am a certifiable nutcase. HOwever, I don't think should make any difference. There is so much irrational hatred for this guy. I haven't heard a single, pointed argument as to why I SHOULDN'T think he's one of the best college basketball players of this era. Maybe you can enlighten me.

1. I worship at J.J.'s altar
so I can't comment.

As to your love for Duke basketball, I'd say my love for them is greater than yours :P and I'm definitely a nutcase. I have been known to forgo dates, formal occasions, shopping, sex, etc. just to watch Duke bball (yes, I'm a female).

There is always hatred for someone who is clearly superior to most (if not all) college players out there. I don't know what will happen to him in the NBA, but he is certainly the top player in the nation and will deserve all the awards he will get.

JJ has two strikes against him, which make him despised by others (fans and players, I'm sure):
1. He is a great player; and
2. He plays at Duke. Thanks to Duke's superb record since Coach K, Duke is like the NY Yankees or Juventus... the team everyone loves to hate.

It'll be fun tonight in Chapel Hell.

He's been talking smack all week.

This should be good. Granted, if they lose, I may get violent.

4. Certainly the top player?
He is really good.

However (and this has nothing to do with the fact that he plays for Duke), I think Adam Morrison is a MUCH better player than Redick is. I think Morrison is going to go on to be a dominant force in the NBA. Redick will be a fine shooter in some team's arsenal, but not a star in the pros. (Of course, this is all speculation.)

Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 04:11 PM by WeRQ4U
He's really damn good. But the reason everyone is on his bandwagon right now is his airtime on all the national sports shows. Noone talked Morrison up this much before the season started.

And I think everyone underestimates J.J. Reddick's worth at the next level. He's become a MUCH more aggressive player this year. He's a better player than Ben Gordon EVER was, and Gordon's doing just fine. People love to speculate like that, but they have no good reasons to think that. Why... because Morrison is taller? I don't get it.

7. No one talked him up that much because he's a Junior
Currently, he has a higher scoring average than Redick (who's a Senior).

Likewise, his points-per-game average as a Junior is a good 7 points higher than Redick's was as a Junior.

I honestly don't think that anyone expected Morrison to explode as much as he did between his Sophomore and Junior years. There was a lot of talk about Redick as he's the key star senior on one of the consistently best programs around. Statistically, however, Morrison tops Redick -- especially when you consider that Morrison is younger and less experienced than Redick.

34. Bigger Body, Though
I think Morrison has a chance to be a very good player in the NBA (not dominant, but very good) because he has the size. He has great touch, obviously a superb eye, sees the court well and can move all night. One of Larry Bird's great abilities, as well as guys like Reggie Miller and Jeff Hornacek, was that they weren't exceptionally fast or quick but they could stay moving every second of every minute. They wear defenders down because there is never a chance to take a break.

Reddick is outstanding, but i think his size will limit his potential in the pros. Using Gordon as the example, as a Bulls fan i can say that Ben is good, but he's never going to be great. Never.

35. Everyone talks about measuring his abilities at the next level...
...according to whether he's going to be "great". Listen, there aren't that many "great" players in the NBA right now. They are few and far between. And a handful of them didn't even PLAY college ball. JJ has actually said that he doesn't expect to be a star. He expects to be a role player just like 80% of the NBA players are. But that has NOTHING to do with what he's done to this point.

Adam Morrison is no lock to being a "star" at the next level. Noone ever is. There just aren't that many of them.

36. That's Not What I Said
I said they're both good, but i think Morrison will be better at the next level. That's no knock on Reddick. But size is a huge factor in the NBA. There haven't been many Tinys, Answers, Mugsys or Spuds in the NBA for a reason.

As a college player he's superb. That is why i really can't say who is better now, he or Morrison. But, i think Morrison has more upside that the pros will like. Don't get so angry.

Part of the measure of any big time athlete is whether they are as good as they're ever going to be, or if they'll get even better. Having the right body for the pros is a heads-up on answering that question.

Sorry if it seemed that way.

And I have to agree with you that Adam Morrison's height is definitely going to help. But Reddick is 6'4" or so. He's not Spud Webb. LOL. Hell, MJ was only 6'6".

41. I Guess I'm More Talking About Width Or Thickness
Jordan always had the frame that was easy to envision extra muscle. So did Magic and Bird. Morrison has that thick body. Reddick looks more like Miller, but a little shorter. Of course, since i didn't stop growing until i was 22, JJ could put on another inch or two. A shooting guard at 6'5", especially with his touch, could be pretty effective.

I've only watched him in three full games this year. I think he's a pretty smart defender, but i haven't seen enough to take a flyer on whether he could defend 2 guards. Ya gotta be quick and strong to defend the 2 in the NBA. Last night though, i did see him make one really smart defensive play at the end where he faked going off his feet when that guy was setting for a three in the left corner. That forced the guy to put the ball on the floor and step inside the 3 line. He didn't make it, but even if he did, it wouldn't have tied the game. And one of JJ's feet never left the floor. So, he smartly baited the guy into putting the ball down. That's pretty clever stuff.

I've seen Morrison do the same. So, i can't fault either of those guys about effort on "D". And, both of those guys make college ball better this year, because it becomes more aggressive on offense and less about the coaches overcoaching.

43. Both players play "adequate" defense.
JJ will have trouble guarding NBA 2 guards. That's for sure. The quick ones will make him move his feet and the bigger ones will muscle him around. Adam Morrison will definitely have less trouble playing big.

What's curious though, is that there are analysts that say they would all-out pass JJ Reddick up in the draft. Now THAT I don't get. There are question marks to his game ie. shot selection and defense, but my lord. I don't expect him to be a number one pick, but a team can never have too many good shooters.

45. There Are Stupid Analysts In Every Field
Remember there were draft mavens who laughed at Bill Walsh for taking Jerry Rice, and people who agreed with Portland for taking Sam Bowie instead of Jordan (who was COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE YEAR)!

And your last point is spot on: There has never been a time in pro basketball history where a shooter couldn't make a team. (Ok, if the guy couldn't guard a statue, he wouldn't. Like Lloyd Daniels or Roger Powell Sr.) But, otherwise, if a guy can shoot, and he's showed it big time in college, some pro team is already salivating over him. Any "expert" who said Reddick won't be drafted is an idiot.

Duke has a horrible record of creating/having pro players come from their program. Does that mean that the program makes players better? Does that mean Coach K makes them better? Does the painfully obvious officiating on their behalf pad their stats? Do they need screens and picks to get open looks?

I don't know. I don't watch as much basketball as I used to but Reddick is pretty damned good....for a Duke player. I have no idea why it is but though they produce some yeoman NBA'ers with long careers (Laetner and Ferry for example) they have never created a dominant star. I know that Grant Hill have attained that status but for injuries but he didn't. CLearly the best Duke product ever in the league would have to be Gminski and he was from the pre-K era of Bill Foster

BTW- this is the FIFTH name of that school-interesting fact

I remember reading that Gminski was thinking of going into politics. He met with fellow North Jersey-ite and Republican Richard Nixon to discuss the matter, though I guess nothing ever came of it.

22. There aren't that many stars in the NBA period.
It's not all that suprising that one school hasn't had one yet. And the measure of success for a COLLEGE program doesn't necessarily have to hinge on whether or not its player acheive success at the next level.

PS. You forgot Elton Brand. I would say he's about as close to a superstar as you're going to find from Duke right now.

44. Brand's come around big time this year.
I put him right up there with the other midsize forwards in the league. Nice 20-10 stat lines, can post up, plays "allright" defense. But being a Timberwolves fan, I've seen this before. Sam Cassell will come in and make the team's go-to man look like the MVP (See Kevin Garnett). And the next year he'll bitch and moan and kill the team. I predict next year will be not so delightful for the Clips team.

46. He's 20:10 For His Career!
What has happened is that he has, every single year, gotten better on defense. His post defense is as good as any P-forward in the league except for, obviously, Garnett and Wallace. When he as a rookie, he was unprepared for the speed and power down low. The next year he was better. Then they traded him for Chandler. Each year in L.A. his defense has improved. He's a fine player. One of the best Dukie's the pros have ever seen.

As you may have guessed from the rest of this thread, I am a pretty big fan of Morrison.

But I don't like Redick.

Initially, I was going to say that I can't root for any player on any team that might come up against my Illini during the tournament -- but that's obviously not true, as I do root for Morrison.

There's always some underlying smugness on behalf of everyone associated with Duke. It's not something I can put my finger on, but I think that has something to do with it.

15. Because he's been hyped

We are told how classy Redick is, how wonderful he is and it is non-stop.

While Redick yelling "Fuck You...Fuck You...Fuck You" over and over again at Georgia Tech's Ismail Muhamaad to his ‘swept under the rug’ bought with the wacky weed you'd think that when God took his first shit, JJ popped out.

Then last year we had ESPN rolling out seemingly each hour a "news show" about how "bad" it has been for Redick on rival campuses and how everyone was being so mean and offensive to him. This is promoted as if HE IS the first to ever have to endure such madness from a bunch of college kids at a rival school. What an absolutely load of shit to paint JJ as a victim when other less coddled walked the path before him without the accomplices known as ESPN to “champion his cause.”

Basically, the reason I hate him is because he has been turned into a demigod of proportions that he can’t hope to attain. Redick is a fine basketball player and one of the greatest pure shooters I have ever seen in ACC basketball history (Dennis Scott of GT, Rodney Monroe of NC State, and Mark Price of Georgia Tech were the best I ever saw), but he’s just a normal guy with normal problems. He is no better than any other kid from any other school. He doesn’t work any harder and doesn’t have to endure any more hardships than any other player at any other school. The difference is, “the other player” doesn’t have a media mouthpiece with his lips permanently attached to Redicks ass.

Redick’s “victim” status was appalling considering he is the most coddled player in the entire ACC by the officials. One set of officials have already been sent packing for one game for screwing up in favor of Duke. I have watched game after game turn on a crucial call. While I watch nearly every opponent of Duke have to battle foul trouble while Duke’s version of hand-checking is basically ignored, excuse me if I don’t shed any tears for Redick.

If anyone should be bitching it is rival schools and their players who don’t have an entire media apparatus promoting propaganda defending them at every turn while trying to dupe us basketball fans into thinking Redick is “just better” than everyone else.

Duke has produced some awesome players and class people…David Henderson, Shane Battier, and Grant Hill come to mind, but they have also produced their share of high class pricks like Redick and Laetner. There is my answer.

Aside from my personal favorites Lamp and Raker (UVa) Spnarkle was an unbelieveable shooter back the in the Duke-Bill Foster days.

You are right about Reddick-at least according to my brother who is a ravenous Duke fan. I asked him if this is not but JJ's world and we are all just trying....he said that the guy from Gonzaga is actually getting more hype than Reddick. I don't know I don't watch ESPN much anymore.

About the officials and Duke-watch a Duke game and count how many replays you see....use one hand. My wife and I caught this several years ago and with the DVR I have watched some of the Georgetown game and it is business as usual even on the GU floor. Phantom whistles and anticipatory calls. How can a team regularly MAKE more free throws than the other team even gets to attempt?

How is that his fault? I agree that Dick Vitale needs to take a step back and examine his nauseating adoration, but it's not like that's a product of the J.J. Reddcik lobbying and P.R. firm. He likes what he sees. And even so, why is it undeserved? Aside from Adam Morrison, who is playing better basketball? 39 minutes, 12-22 from the floor, 6-6 on free throw attempts, 35 points (the second highest scoring night in the history of the Dean SMith center). And this is coming during one of the most anticipated and pressure filled games of the year.

While Redick yelling "Fuck You...Fuck You...Fuck You" over and over again at Georgia Tech's Ismail Muhamaad to his ‘swept under the rug’ bought with the wacky weed you'd think that when God took his first shit, JJ popped out.

What's your point. So this college basketball player can't use curse words. He can't talk smack? The guy takes a verbal and physical beating every single game. He's got a target on his back. Every single team's best defensive player thinks he can get the best of him. So he gets in somone's face once in a while. Chris Paul cold cocked a guy during a game. Washington stomped a guy in the face on the sideline. Are J.J. Reddick's horrific curse words as bad as these things? Come on. And I also love how smoking dope is perfectly acceptable to everyone and their mother on DU...until now. Pot is God's gift and all shall smoke it...except J.J. Please. So do you convict everyone of crimes that they've never been tried for?

Then last year we had ESPN rolling out seemingly each hour a "news show" about how "bad" it has been for Redick on rival campuses and how everyone was being so mean and offensive to him. This is promoted as if HE IS the first to ever have to endure such madness from a bunch of college kids at a rival school. What an absolutely load of shit to paint JJ as a victim when other less coddled walked the path before him without the accomplices known as ESPN to “champion his cause.”

It has nothing to do with whether or not other players have gone through the same treatment in the past. What ESPN and many other news outlets have lauded is his ability to DEAL with it. He does take a verbal lashing every single time he steps on the court. There are more Duke haters than their are grains of sand on the beach. EVERYONE wants to yell something at that kid. (If you think otherwise then you've got a brain cloud). But that doesn't stop him from dropping 41 on a Texas squad that many considered superior. Other players have certainly had to endure being screamed at by opposing fans, but not all of them endure it like J.J. Reddick does. Sure, some do, but very few.

The difference is, “the other player” doesn’t have a media mouthpiece with his lips permanently attached to Redicks ass.

So, in other words, you hate him because of what other people have made him out to be? That's about as irrational an argument as I can think of. You would say the same thing about Adam Morrison right? He doesn't work harder than anyone else....He doesn't have to deal with the media....he doesn't endure any more struggles than the rest of his team right? This is BS. There are reasons that certain players are better than others, and in J.J. Reddick's case, it isn't because he's blessed with blazing speed, ridiculous athletic talent, height, handles....NOTHING. This kid is just an average kid with a tiny 6'3" frame that has transformed his game over a period of 4 years. Where he was once JUST a 3point shooter. Now, there isn't a hole in his college game. And you claim that everyone is equal.....then why do Reddick and Morrison continue to drop 35-40 point monsters on EVERYONE, while noone esle seems to be able to?

Redick’s “victim” status was appalling considering he is the most coddled player in the entire ACC by the officials. One set of officials have already been sent packing for one game for screwing up in favor of Duke. I have watched game after game turn on a crucial call. While I watch nearly every opponent of Duke have to battle foul trouble while Duke’s version of hand-checking is basically ignored, excuse me if I don’t shed any tears for Redick.

Typical response from Duke haters. It's the easiest way to get around the fact that even though their favorite squad plays without error for the full 40 minutes, they still come up 5 points short in the end. It's such malarky. Without something that I can SEE which shows that this is true, I'll file it with the theories that the NFL officials know who's going to win the super bowl before the season starts and they figure the officiating around that desired result. It's conspiracy. And it's bullshit.

As for the officials that got suspended.....that didn't have anything to do with Reddick. First, that wasn't THAT bad of a call. It was, most definitely a flagrant foul. He horse collared Sheldon Williams and threw him to the ground. But I get it, numerous trips to the final four, a handfull of championships and a ridiculous string of ACC tournament wins is the product of an underground officiating superconspiracy orchestrated to insure Duke's prominance. Did people say this shit about John Wooden's teams when they won all the time? It's hyperbole and it's uninformed. They go to the line alot because they always have good interior basketball players and because they run a motion offense against undermanned, lazy zone defenses. You know, there's also a camp of people who believe that Duke doesn't get calls. Both sides are stretching.

If anyone should be bitching it is rival schools and their players who don’t have an entire media apparatus promoting propaganda defending them at every turn while trying to dupe us basketball fans into thinking Redick is “just better” than everyone else.

Sorry if I don't follow. So J.J. Reddick didn't actually score 35 last night. He ISN'T actually going to set ACC and DUke scoring and 3-point shooting records? His entire college career is actually just a sham perpetuated by Duke-loving media outlets? Wow, us basketball fans sure are gullable? :sarcasm: So, let me gets your argument right here....Reddick isn't as good a basketball player BECAUSE the media likes to remind me that he is? Let me propose this....maybe Reddick gets media attention because, (GASP!!) HE KEEPS DROPPING 35 POINT GAMES...on ranked opponents no less. I'll take the latter.

Duke has produced some awesome players and class people…David Henderson, Shane Battier, and Grant Hill come to mind, but they have also produced their share of high class pricks like Redick and Laetner. There is my answer.

Duke has produced some fantastic basketball players........and J.J. Reddick will break every single one of their scoring records. And if doing so makes him an "high class prick", then I guess it does.

21. He plays for a right-wing coach
Coach K raised money for Elizabeth Dole and is a noted Republican.

He coaches my favorite basketball team. He doesn't babysit my kids.

But that's just me. I know that a LOT of people don't like Coach K either. To each his own I guess.

23. To all the J.J. haters...............what happened last night?
Too many "phantom calls". Coach K intimidation, through his subversive, right wing connections? Or did he just single-handedly rip North Carolina's hearts out.

Sure, he made two fairly decent sized errors towards the end of the game, but he also carried the team in the second half, stopping every single run UNC made.

But, what did I hear after the game? "Reddick is a dick for smiling after hitting that step back three." "Reddick is so cocky....he made that gesture after he scored on Noel." Give me a fucking break people.

Another unbelievable performance explained away by irrational bullshit.

GO DUKE!

28. Just about every player does a little "happy dance" after a big play
it's just part of basketball. So I definitely don't want to see anyone get on JJ's case for that, and let us not forget those clutch 3's that he drained at the end of the game. Face it JJ is money but I fear he won't silence the Duke haters until he wins the big one this year.

For the record...I would have JJ's love child if the situation presented itself. I've been a crazy Dukie since the Bobby Hurley days when I was a little girl

31. it's a shame what happened to him
after the accident, he was never the same. I guess he lost his competitive edge, and then when Jason Williams had his accident...I had Deja Vu. Sad really.

I think the only time I ever wanted to get up in someone's face at a Duke game (and I've been to a bunch including east regionals) was when a Texas fan (not this year but I think when we kicked their asses 2 years ago) started yelling shit about Jason Williams and hoping he would never walk again. First of all it's not like Williams was there so who exactly were you taunting and second I don't care how much you dislike a player, you never wish permanent disability on them. We didn't say anything because we didn't want to start shit but thats just not cool. I've heard some nasty things at a game but that one was the worst.

32. Contrary to what many people say on this board.
You'd probably hear stuff that bad directed at Reddick every game.

But that may be just another media-orchestrated propaganda campaign to inflate JJ's worth.

38. It appears you just want to fight with people about this.
Judging from your other comments in the thread, it seems like you just want people to disagree with you so that you can have something fight over.

You're forgetting the first rule of sports - irrational hatred and love come with the territory. Get over it.

And I haven't been overly snarky to anyone. What, one long post in reponse to another makes this combative?

I don't get it.
