Meet the Newest DU Kitten!
Spencer...and his confused older brother, Riley.

Spencer is 5 months old, I just got him today from the animal shelter. He and Riley doing really good so far. Spencer is roaming around the apartment like he owns the place. Riley is following him, trying to figure out where the little upstart came from. They've batted each other a bit, but nothing bad. :)

he's acting confused, but not angry...and they're already searching each other out. I can tell they'll get along fine once they've both settled down a bit. :)

And yet, no bloodshed. Riley got all snobby, then laid down on the other side of the bed. He's feigning sleep, but his tail betrays his annoyance.

trying to lay down the law right now.

He just stormed the blanket.

Spencer opened his eyes and turned his back.

Riley swatted his butt...claws in.

Spencer rolled over on his tummy and basically rolled his eyes.

Riley chuffed and walked away.

...this is fun, lol

49. If they start to really fight - you just have to put a door between them
for a few days. The little one will be trying to play through the door, the big one will sit there overwhelmed by curiosity. They will fall in love through the door, and when they finally get to see each other again - it will be peace.

51. Thanks for the advice
they're doing really well so far.

The big one is mostly confused...and a little pissed because the kitten has taken over HIS blanket. But he's not being violent, just little smacks on the head and butt (with claws in). The kitten could care less. ;)

53. Really - keep in mind kittens are play machines. And cats play harder than
dogs. The fighting is normal. So is jumping on each other and trying to pin each other down & biting. Mine wrestle every day and mostly you hear little squeaks and meows of joy amid the biting (play biting - no blood or scars ever). If they ever get really mad or scared - the little one will arch its back and hair will stand on end get them apart then - cause a little cat if feeling abused at this point and it is not supposed to be about fear like that at all. If that or growling and spitting doesn't happen - they are just playing. My kitten is the initiator and the dive-bomber. The rougher the rough-housing gets - the better as far as it is concerned.

So too batting is normal if they are on each others nerves. And dominance for special spots - the big one may not tolerate the little one in a spot the big guy likes. A little nip of the butt usually vacates the spot.

They'll get into routines. But you may want to try the separation through a door for the next few weeks when you are not there. Make sure their is enough room for paws to reach through and they will play and yearn for each other while you are gone.

In a few weeks - your big cat will not remember life before (cats don't have episodic memories). So the jealousy & insecurity should be gone.

They were up most of the night fighting...but not hurting each other, so I let it go.

The kitten has already taken over Riley's beloved blanket and Riley refuses to share the bed with the kitten so far. He's really not very happy, but I think after a few days he'll be fine. :)

I'm having fun watching them get to know each other. Which isn't so much fun when they're playing "Stampeding Herds on the Sarengeti" across my bed at 2 am, but ooooh welll. ;)

I'm just north of Studio City...so I haven't actually smelled the OC fire. However, a large cloud of smoke blocked out the sun on Monday morning. And I've got the itchy eyes, plugged up nose thing. But it's generally no biggie in my neighborhood. :hi:

yes, they do look very similar!

I think Spencer is either semi-feral or didn't have much luck with humans until now. He really doesn't like to be held, though occasionaly he'll allow me to pet him...and he purrs like a maniac. He definitely seems more comfortable around the other cat (who hates him, at this point).

65. Remember to pay EXTRA attention to Riley
He needs to know he's not being replaced, and that you still love him. Whenever we get a new kitty, we always make sure the others get extra attention (which is really hard, 'cuz you want to spend lots of time with the cute little kitten!).

Lots of love to Spencer, extra snuggles for Riley.

67. I've been trying
Riley's pretty pissed at me right now, so he's not really wanting the snuggles. But I keep trying!

Meanwhile, the kitten isn't that comfortable with me yet, so I've been giving him space. Although Riley lost his space on the bed to Spencer last night. That wasn't very popular, but that wasn't my doing. ;)
