Best song where a band sings about itself?
My vote goes to Antmusic by Adam and the Ants.

Unplug the jukebox and do us all a favour
That music's lost its taste, so try another flavour...Antmusic!

13. Definitely seconded!
Made a lightning trip to Vienna,
eating chocolate cake in a bag.
The newspaper said, "She's gone to his head,
They look just like two gurus in drag".

Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.

And cruuuuuuuuuuuuise

And share a beer
Head out to the desert
I can hear it from here

Ride all the way
To where the lizards play
Riding on and on and on
There're a million stars
It'll blow you away
It's all so Concrete Blond

I'm still in Hollywood...

32. Belle + Sebastian - Get me Away From Here, I'm Dying...
Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying - Lyrics

Ooh! Get me away from here I'm dying
Play me a song to set me free
Nobody writes them like they used to
So it may as well be me
Here on my own now after hours
Here on my own now on a bus
Think of it this way
You could either be successful or be us
With our winning smiles, and us
With our catchy tunes, and us
Now we're photogenic
You know, we don't stand a chance

Oh, I'll settle down with some old story
About a boy who's just like me
Thought there was love in everything and everyone
You're so naive!
After a while they always get it
They always reach a sorry end
Still it was worth it as I turned the pages solemnly, and then
With a winning smile, the boy
With naivety succeeds
At the final moment, I cried
I always cry at endings

Oh, that wasn't what I meant to say at all
From where I'm sitting, rain
Washing against the lonely tenement
Has set my mind to wander
Into the windows of my lovers
They never know unless I write
"This is no declaration, I just thought I'd let you know goodbye"
Said the hero in the story
"It is mightier than swords
I could kill you sure
But I could only make you cry with these words"

35. Not a band...but a singer....Johnny Cash. Sad that he died still wearing
black...

Man In Black

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

37. Replacements Treatment Bound
We're gettin' no place
Fast as we can
Get a noseful
From our so-called friends
We're gettin' nowhere
Quick as we know how
We whirl from town to town
Treatment bound
First thing we do when we finally pull up
Get shitfaced drunk Try to sober up
There'll be no pose tonight
No money in sight
Label wants a hit
And we don't give a shit
'Cause we're gettin' no place
As fast as we can
We get a noseful
From our so-called friends
We're gettin' nowhere
quick as we know how
We whirl from town to town
Duluth to Madison
Treatment bound
. . .
There's no mass appeal
Carton's asleep at the wheel
Yesterday's trash
Too bored to thrash
We're gettin' nowhere
Fast as we can
We got a noseful
Of them so-called friends
We're gettin' no place
Quick as we know how
We're gettin' nowhere
What will we do now?

KMFDM - "Sucks"
We like talking dirty, we smoke and we drink
We're KMFDM and all other bands stink

Our music is sampled, totally fake
It's done by machines 'cause they don't make mistakes

We don't have no lyrics, our message is nil
We hate all DJ's, they're making us ill

Whatever we tell you is meant to be crap
We hate all music and especially rap

We don't like Michael Jackson, we hate Depeche Mode
We don't care for Madonna or Kylie Minogue

Our records have stickers with a warning from Tipper
'Cause they're no good for kids if we'd get her we'd strip her

KMFDM forward the ultimate sound
And a message from Satan if you turn it around

You might think we're stupid but we're way above it
We don't give a shit and the kids just love it

We wouldn't sell to a major for a couple of bucks
No doubt about it, KMFDM sucks

52. They Got Lost by TMBG
(They Might Be Giants)

Julie at the station says They'll be here any minute now
But she's running out of records and her show is ending anyhow.
They can hear her saying Their name on the car radio
But the signal keeps fading out no matter which way They go.
I heard They Might Be somewhere in this town
They Might Be Giants got lost driving around

John said to John, I think we make a left at the light
There should be a big crinkle, assuming this map is right
John looked over and said, Hey, no its not
It's a crumpled up wrapper from the fast food that we got
I heard They Might Be somewhere in this town
They Might Be Giants got lost driving around

Dan said to Hal, "I see somebody walking this way"
So They rolled down the window and said, "Hello. Hey excuse me, hey"
"Could you tell us where we are and the best way out of here"
They could tell from his expression he had absolutely no idea
I heard They Might Be somewhere near this town
They Might Be Giants got lost driving around
Driving around
Driving around
They're still driving around

57. KOMPRESSOR DOES NOT DANCE!
Here are pills for rave power
You eat and feel good
Go into the dance club
And go on to the floor
DJ starts the music
Kompressor lock the door
People start to drinking
They go into a trance
Kompressor hate them all
Because Kompressor does not dance

Kompressor does not dance
Kompressor does not dance

You do not use a Macintosh
instead you use a Tandy
Kompressor break your glowstick
Kompressor eat your candy
Kompressor open jaws
Kompressor release ants
Kompressor watch you scream
Because Kompressor does not dance

Kompressor does not dance
Kompressor does not dance

You like to eat the rave drugs
You get more energy
You think it's worth the money
But we do not agree
We make pill of poison
With snuffing stimulants
Kompressor watch you die
Because Kompressor does not dance

Kompressor does not dance
Kompressor does not dance

59. Truckin' Greatful Dead
Truckin' got my chips cashed in
Keep truckin' like the doodah man
Together, more or less in line
Just keep truckin' on

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and its all the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Dallas got a soft machine
Houston too close to New Orleans
New York got the ways and means
But just won't let you be

Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of true love
Most of the time they're sitting and crying at home
One of these days they know they gotta get going
Out of the door and into the street all alone

Truckin' like the doodah man
Once told me "Gotta play your hand
Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime
If you don't lay them down"

Sometimes the lights all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane? (note 1)
She lost her sparkle you know she isn't the same
Living on reds and vitamin C and cocaine
All her friends can say is ain't it a shame

Truckin' up to Buffalo
Been thinking you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go
Just keep truckin' on

Sitting and staring out of the hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
Like to get some sleep before I travel
But if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in

Busted down on Bourbon Street
Set up like a bowling pin
Knocked down, it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around, you'd like to travel
Get tired of travelling you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for trying
Get out of the door, light out and look all around

Sometimes the lights all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

Truckin' I'm a going home
Whoa, whoa, baby, back where I belong
Back home, sit down and patch my bones
And get back truckin' on

67. Dirty Frank by Pearl Jam
It's a song they wrote about their adventures with their tour bus driver (whom they dubbed "Dirty Frank.") Apparently he was kind of psycho, and the song imagines the possibility of Dirty Frank killing the band...

sample lyric:

"Where's Mike? My God! He's been ate!"
