Compliments are always hard to take. First, I never know if the person saying it really means it, or is just being sarcastic or phony. Second, I get compliments for things I feel I have done badly (playing piano). If they are sincere, how could they not have noticed the mistakes? Third, they are so rare that I have not learned how to handle them.

Jokes or attempted jokes can be hard to take too. Some jokes have victims. When Group A tells a joke about Group B it is more about belittling Group B than it is about humour. I do not like being in group B, and will stick up for groups that I do not even like. In the same way as jokes can perpetuate stereotypes and bigotry, they can also spread factual errors.

But I laugh alot too and try to make jokes or be a clown and often get :wtf: or :spank:. Lots of times people do not get my jokes because they haven't read enough Susan Sontag.
