Poll question: What is this board's opinion of the White Stripes? |
|
I've been on a White Stripes fix lately and have been playing "Seven Nation Army" on repeat for the last half hour.

1. Great Rock n Roll Band! |
|
I love their under-complicated rock sound with the occasional blues and folksy numbers mixed in. One of the best bands of the decade.

2. Hell yeah, I have four of their albums. |
|
Only lacking "Elephant" but I have those songs on MP3 format so I wont need to buy the album for a while.

3. I've seen them play many times and still really like them... |
|
I haven't picked up the newest record yet, but I'll get it eventually.
I think they're a great band and they're so much fun to see live. I lucked out and got to see them early on a lot--when the first record was out, I think--in front of tiny audiences (like 50-100 people) and that was extra fun.
Unfortunately I had to sell most of my 45's last year when I was broke but I burned the songs so I still kind of have them, but not really. And I could do without this "zombie johnny depp" look Jack's sportin' but it's not the end of the world.
So yeah. In conclusion, they're great.

5. Sorry, I'm going to have to go ahead and say "I don't get it". |
|
I've tried and tried but their songs just don't do it for me. I don't know whether it's the way White Stripes Monthly . . . er, sorry, SPIN . . . masturbates over this group like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, or that there's a whole yin-yang thing with them talent-wise (is that supposed to be on purpose?), or that I'm not a huge fan of minimalist garage-rock or faux-blues or whatever it is.
It's shaky ground to say you don't like them, because they're one of these "Required to Like" groups that I talked about two months ago. That is, if you don't worship at the altar of said RTL group, well then you simply have no taste in music.

I wasn't impressed when they first came out. But my husband has loved them from the beginning...which is kind of odd because his main musical tastes are metal and oldies, but he's never been into "modern/alternative/or-whatever-you-want-to-call-it" rock. I'm the alt-rock dork in the relationship, so it would have made more sense for me to obsess over them. But it definitely took me a while to warm up to them. I must say I do love them now, though. I actually stole hubby's "Get Behind Me Satan" CD...I've been rocking it in my car for over a month now! I like that CD the best, although I do really like the one before that, too.
And I must say I really don't understand all the Meg White bashing that goes on. She is an integral part of their sound. They wouldn't be the band they are with a different "more technically skilled" drummer. Just like they wouldn't be the band they are if they had a separate rhythm guitarist and bassist. And Jack White says so, too! I read an interview where he passionately defends Meg's drumming, and accuses her detractors of sexism. Go Jack!
