Why do people exercise? Or attempt to persevere?
Is it stock animalistic "survival mechanism", or is there more to it?

1. because even though I am still unattractively fat,
when I exercise regularly, I mentally feel better about myself, like at least I'm trying, as opposed to sitting around all day, which admittedly, sounds like more fun. :-)

It helps keep my blood pressure down, too.

8. Actually, for any physical characteristic, there are

people who like it ... Did you know, in Europe just a couple hundred years ago, being plump was considered a desirable thing (it has been shown to be better for childbearing, among other things...)? There are always people who will like you as you are, if you look for them ...

Edited to add: I like all shapes and sizes for instance.... women are great!

3. Well, I can only speak for myself, my dear HypnoToad.......
I exercise because it feels good afterwards....

It helps keep my blood pressure under control...

It helps me lose the ugly fat I'm still carrying around.....

I know it will improve the odds that I will live well for many more years...

Certainly the survival mechanism is a big part of all this!

6. Because I enjoy it
I take myself on long bike rides: 20-40 miles. I choose routes for their scenic value. I spend time writing in my head or just day dreaming. Besides, beer tastes much better after a workout

13. It makes me feel good.
I've never had excess weight to deal with, but I do have fragile health and an assortment of physical issues. when I exercise, I'm less depressed, have more energy, sleep better, have an appetite for more nourishing foods and less junk, my skin looks better, my focus is on target...

As far as I'm concerned exercise is the miracle drug; the fountain of youth; the secret to eternal vitality.

15. I am about 60 pounds overweight and I'm 46 years old
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 03:04 PM by new_beawr
My BP is 125 over 70 (average)

Blood Sugar is normal

Rest heart rate is 65 (average)

Blood Fats are all in normal range

I can walk five miles without stopping in a little over an hour

Until I started exercising regularly, I was at the Chiropractor's 2-3 times a month for an aching back - now, I have no back problems.

We're supposed to move - a lot......My Wife teaches Yoga, and she has shown me the light on that account......

If I didn't exercise, who knows how shitty I'd feel. If you don't feel good, you are going to have a problem thinking well.....

Oh Yes, After starting regular exercise - I stopped taking Wellbutrin - the function performed by the drug is also performed when you exercise....

17. For the high
I'm all about the rush I get after exercising. The only thing that comes in second is the rush you get after giving birth (and, trust me, I don't want to go through that everyday or ever again --- but that's probably TMI)

I also agree that while my body may not be the type which blesses magazine covers, exercising and staying healthy is something which makes me feel more confident. It seems the more confident I feel, the more attractive others find me.

18. It FEELS good. When I'm down in the dumps, unmotivated, PMSing, 30 minutes
of a good, hard workout gets my ass in line, puts a HUGE smile on my face and jacks me right up.

I never expect it to. I don't go in waiting for it to happen, but at the end of the workout, the endorphins have kicked in and I'm happy as a clam and energized for the day.

I work out 5 days a week right now. I HURT a lot, but it's all worth it. I'd rather have the pain of working muscles than failing joints and a flabby gut.

I've been alternating those lunges with gut crunches in order to spread the pain out over more days, lol. Good fun!

20. Several reasons.
1. I like to be strong.
2. I like to have lean, firm muscles.
3. I like being powerful and flexible.
4. I like knowing I am ensuring strong bones (I'm in a high-risk group for osteoporosis).
5. I like having good cardiovascular health.
6. I like knowing I have endurance.
7. I feel good exercising, and I feel good when I'm done.
8. I enjoy the satisfaction of achievment.

In addition to the benefits above, I get an overall sense of well-being from exercise. My sleep has improved and my stress level is reduced.

There is a lot more to exercise than being slim and looking well, although most people also derive pleasure from looking their best and feeling confident.

I started working out because my girl of 17 years broke my heart.
we are still together and doing OK i guess.
But I am not going to be 40 fat and sad if or when i get dumped.
So for me its survival and i llost 35 lbs so far in 4 1/2 months..

I like it mainly because it's like going for a nice walk, only you get to take more scenery in because you're going faster and hence further.

I attempt to perservere because it's not in my nature to curl up in a little ball and give up. I may not succeed at anything but it won't be for lack of trying.

30. I Love Being In Motion
I love running especially because I can do things I would NEVER do under normal circumstances...like spit and blow snot out of my nose in public. I really like doing both of those if I ever find myself being stared at by some horn dog. And I am fast. And it is fun!

And I have to keep up with Pey Pey! At 46 some days are really exhausting!

31. the human body was made to move
I agree with the thoughts offered here: that it feels good but it also hurts. That there's a high that comes from it.

I can't do exercise like on a stationery bike or treadmill. Way too boring. But I exercise using my property as a gym. I am constantly digging flower beds, mowing, weeding, chopping leaves, turning compost piles, picking up branches, you name it. There is a ton of work to be done on a sizable property but when done regularly, the results show and they can be fantastic.

Nothing is more satisfying to me than returning to my home and seeing the various trees, shrubs, and flowers in bloom. It's the best: nothing beats it!

Cher
