6. Were they bigger too?
The first one I saw was so close to the size of a cassette tape.

The small size of it was what impressed me the most.

5. My best friend in junior high had one of those
I remember that you could record on it through the built-in microphone-- a feature most of the knock-offs didn't have at the time.

I think I may have a casette walkman around the house somewhere... I practicall lived off mine in college. Ah memories...

7. Sure do.
Although my first one was a Toshiba which had a special cassette to put in and you had FM Radio, too:

The next one (still functioning!) was a Sony:

10. Mine broke occasionally when I still was a teen.
The good thing about them was you could plug in two headphone sets. And then - remember - you could press the yellow button which activated an inbuilt mic and could have a conversation with your buddy still wearing the headphones.

They banned it from our high school, though.

12. That's true, almost twice the size.
But I remember it being also quite expensive. (Got mine on Christmas from my mom, along with every David Bowie and ELO albums.)

9. Had One!
Just had to have it! It was such a huge step forward from anything prior. Wowie! A portable that actually sounds good! I probably got the third one sold at the Service Merchandise near our town.

14. I still use mine sometimes.
Not the first I bought, but a more recent model.

Occassionally I'll need to convert something on a cassette to a digital file. My full sized cassette deck is long gone because it took up too much room and I rarely used it, but I can always plug my Walkman into the computer and get a pretty decent transfer.

I've also got a reel-to-reel tape recorder, turntable, an eight inch floppy drive, etc., etc., just because you never know what you might find. ;)
