Ill-conceived 'supergroups'
Traveling Wilburys.

Take four of the most distinctive, legendary (even mythic) voices in rock history, with no ability to blend together at all. Add horrible songs. Multiply by Jeff Lynne. :puke:

Thread over.

The only reason to watch that movie is to revel in how bad it is. even then it is just painful.

96. 'Nut Rocker' has a warm spot in my heart
My cousin's band, the Tridents, covered the B. Bumble and the Stingers version around 1962. He was the pianist, and I can remember asking him to "play that fast song." (I was 6.)

It and another B. Bumble song they did, "Bumble Boogie," were my introduction to rock 'n' roll. :headbang:

... the punk movement and rock crits managed to rewrite history. Frankly, EL&P did some real crap, but they did some pretty tasty stuff also.

Keith Emerson really was an incredible keyboardist, and sure their work was "pretentious", every bit of pop music ever made that is worth a shit is "pretentious". :) In fact, the word "pretentious" is pretentious.

Their version of "Jerusalem" is perfect, as over the top as the nutcake who wrote the words long ago :)

All just IMHO.

Granted, they didn't age as well as some of their contemporaries, and their later albums are ridiculously bad, but when they were good they were pretty great.

100. They peaked at Tarkus
Trilogy was also alright in spots (when Keith kept his masturbation to what was in his pants, and not on his keyboard), but 'Brain Salad Surgery' and 'Pictures' are unlistenable crap.

Compare what ELP was doing to what King Crimson was doing at the same time, and there's no comparison.

And I'm somebody who owns all their stuff thru 1980 on vinyl!

14. Asia's close, damn close - but did you forget GTR?

Steve Hackett and Steve Howe, completely wasting their talent of some of the ghastilest pop tripe of the '80s. I repeat for emphasis: of the '80s. One could make a compelling argument for the superiority of Giuffria.

I've forgotten in which magazine it was, but GTR's lone album earned a less-than-one-word record review: "SHT."

Oh, and while we're at it, let's polish it down to a tolerance of 0.00000000000000000001 microsucks. Couldn't produce more "perfect" music on a computer (at least not one from 1982). Perfect as in "devoid of anything resembling art." I have the original Asia LP in my collection, so I can confirm this and everything you all are saying. I love prog rock, but I'm not sure what this Asia stuff is supposed to be.

featuring former members of the Sex Pistols and Blondie. Unfortunately, also included kiss of death Michael Des Barres as lead singer. Des Barres is a really nice and funny guy, but any musical enterprise that includes him is doomed to failure.

Blind Faith was a group of genius, and it's a crying shame that they didn't put out more. What is your objection to it?

Of course, it seems that I'm not on the popular side of this debate. I thought that the Traveling Wilburys and ELP were both pretty good groups also. And quite frankly, back in the day, a lot of people agreed with me:evilgrin:

101. Well that's enlightening
And why did four of the arguably best musicians of their day suck, in your opinion? Let me guess, you don't like Cream or Traffic either:eyes:

41. Tin Machine
Anything but legendary... often put to shame by their opening acts, i.e. the local garage doofuses in Providence, RI. when they played Club Babyhead, a venue seating a tightly packed 200 people, I could have roller skated around in front of the stage.

David Bowie was nice to me though.

43. Dylan and Petty were great together. Dylan and Harrison were good
together...they should have left it there! I think they were trying to capitalize on Roy Orbison's fading rennaisance at the start. Sadly, they kept it up after Roy went away. Criminal, really. Yes. End of thread.

48. I'd have to go...
... since I'm a fan of prog-rock (even still :) ) with UK or Asia. Both were packed with ostensibly talented folks who had done well in other groups, neither made a single song worth hearing.

50. The New Yardbirds.
Following the dissolution of The Yardbirds, Yardbirder Jimmy Page joined up with experienced session bassist John Paul Jones and Band of Joy members Robert Plant and John Bonham (Procol Harum's frontman having declined the opportunity). They changed their name to "Lead Zeppelin", but had to change the name again due to the uncertain pronunciation of the name.

Through the entire decade of the 1970s, they drifted into obscurity, failing to produce a top 10 hit in their final 6 studio albums. Their talents unleashed, two of the three surviving members would finally reclaim their glory with multiple top-10 hits on the same album in separate careers in the years following the band's breakup.

For some reason, some of those songs aren't bad.

For the record, the title of this reply is an actual Butthole Surfers song.

I got all excited thinking there was a Butthole Surfers song about Anderson Wakeman Bruford and Howe, though.

Maybe you should write one.

78. It's because the DM mention the Butthole Surfers in the song.
And if I was to write about ABWH, it'd be a parody of their style of playing on a hidden song on the end of the CD, with me on helium to imitate John Anderson's vocals.

67. Mushroomhead.
Clevelanders know this. Mushroomhead formed as a side project of members of local metal bands. It soon became like nWo of the WCW in real life. Then Slipknot got more popular than them using their (well, Bile's and Mr Bungle's) calling card. Only in Cleveland.

The most ill concieved supergroup in real life was The Firm. "Radioactive" SSUUUUUUCKED.

73. Queen with Paul Rodgers
:puke: :puke:

Freddie wanted his band Queen to continue on after his death and I will admit that Paul Rodgers has great vocals. But something about Paul singing Freddie songs just does not mesh with me. It's like listening to Bad Company do a Queen tribute show.

I would have rather seen Brian May & Roger Taylor just tour and do their own vocals (which they have for many of the Queen songs). It's a shame that John Deacon retired

94. Ooh ooh - Velvet Revolver!!
Take some washed up musicians (the reminants of the original Guns N Roses), add a once-great alternative rock singer who went completely fucking off the deep end (Scott Weiland of STP) and you get Velvet Revolver.

I guess the same could apply to Audioslave, but unlike VR, Audioslave has an album that's actually worth listening to!
