I just ate a PACZKI! .... what filling do YOU like?
Paczki (punch-key) Day is the feast of plenty before the Lenten fast begins. It is the last day of gaiety in Karnawal time, the period between Christmas and Lent. This is the time for sleigh parties called Kulig. To mark the last moments of excess before the austerity of Lenten sacrifice, Polish Roman Catholics celebrate Paczki Day.

1. I must be culturally deprived, my dear auntAgonist!
I have NEVER had one!

What are the choices for fillings?

2. oh Peggy!
I had bavarian cream, MrAgonist aka Gryphon loves the lemon filled, lets see, they had raspberry, holland cream, (don't know what that one is.) strawberry, bavarian cream, apple and blueberry.
all very yummy. I can barely eat a whole one these days. There was a time when I'd have 2 with a cup of coffee, good thing I can't do that anymore eh? .. LOL

 dear Peggy, nice to see you again. Missing you on the other forum :(

3. Oh, my dear auntAgonist.......
I feel so guilty about not going there more often.....

I do enjoy it...but I'm still learning how to get around. It seems just a tiny bit less intuitive than DU.......

I was just wondering how you feel going back and forth, between your own forum, and DU?

Good to see you tonight as well!

The fillings sound wonderful.....and extremely caloric! Good thing we don't have them here in California!

:loveya:

4. I love the largeness of DU
the people here are great, but I do enjoy the intimacy of my forum. I've met most of the people in real life. We had a gathering last summer, people came from Washington DC and Taos NM to have dinner and an evening with Gryphon and I. There are some new happenings on the forum these days too, some exciting stuff that will soon go public :)
It does take time to get familiar with it all. But we love having you over there!!!

6. Now I feel deprived.
There was a Polish-Catholic church in my old neighborhood and there were rumors of these great pastries, but I never went to the public bake sales and events. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

7. the local supermarkets sell them here
6 in a box. I like the powdered sugar coated ones. The granulated sugar coated don't do it for me :)

8. Already?
It's not paczki season yet!

Cream filled or blueberry are the best. Prune-filled (most traditional) -- ugh.

12. Pushing the season....
Pretty soon we'll see them in stores in January. Like Halloween candy in August. Oh the horror....80 zillion calorie treats all year long...

13. Aren't Paczkis a Detroit/Hamtramck thing?
I never heard of them in Grand Rapids, or Kalamazoo, even though there are plenty of people of Polish descent in both cities.

Meijer is not the best place to get them, even if it is one of the easier places to get them (free parking, waiting inside instead of outside). The bakeries in Hamtramck are really the only place to go for the best Paczkis.

I like them filled with either chocolate or plain custard. I'm not a fruit filling kind of gal, I guess.

15. Nope, a Polish thing

I'm in Chicago and paczki day is big. Of course, technically you're only supposed to eat them on the day before lent. It's supposed to be a special treat for a special day that's only served once a year.

17. Heh. Mochi is supposed to be a New Year's treat...
…but we Japanese Americans eat the stuff pretty much year-'round.

18. We Polacks do not eat Paczkis year round
Many of us are already fat enough with heart disease and high cholesteral problems. Those little fat bombs have more calories and fat than a Big Mac! Can you imagine what we'd look like if we ate those all year? :wow:

16. I have no trouble finding "ponchkis" (excuse me "paczkis") in Chicagoland
There's a wonderful chain of Polish supermarkets that make the best fresh sausage. Once you get used to fresh made, you can't go back to factory-made.
