1. A throwback to another time.
I've had a few. Mostly when I travel. I look forward to them. ... a chance to make small talk and connect with a former stranger. Perhaps pick up a tip or pointer about a nearby eatery or some such. I like to think it connects me to my dad's time. Thanks for the memories.

2. There's this very elderly man who has been giving shoe shines...
...on base here for probbly 50 years now. In all honesty, he doesn't do a very good job. But just for the fact that, at close to 90 years of age he still gets up at 5:00am to shine shoes, he gets my business. Plus, he tells some of the dirtiest spanish jokes I've ever heard.

3. Why yes, as a matter of fact, I did.
I fell for that stupid scam on Bourbon St. "I didn't ask you where you bought 'em, I asked you where you got 'em!" Sheesh. What a :dunce:

When you feel as low
as the bottom of a well
and can't get out of the mood
Do something to perk yourself up
and change your attitude
Give a tug to your tie
Put a crease in your pants
But if you really want to feel fine
give your shoes a shine

When there's a shine on your shoes
there's a melody in your heart
With a singable happy feeling
a wonderful way to start
to face the world every day
with a deedle-dum-dee-dah-dah
A little melody that is making
The worrying world go by

when you walk down the street
with a happy-go-lucky beat
You'll find a lot in what I'm repeating
When there's a shine on your shoes
There's a melody in your heart
What a wonderful way to start the day!

Now there's a shine that you get in the barber shop
There's a shine that you get in the Pullman car
There's a shine that you get in the pool room
There's a shine that you get in the school room

But it doesn't matter where you get it
It'll do a lot of good if you let it
A little bit of polish will abolish what's bothering you

when there's a shine on your shoes
Melody in your heart
Singable happy feeling
Wonderful!

Music by Arthur Schwartz; Lyric by Howard Dietz
Performed by Fred Astaire

8. Yep
I splurged once years ago after emerging from the F train for a job interview in the city. It was fun and I looked good. Don't think I got that job, though...

10. Yes.
Years ago just to say that I had one. The gentleman who did the service was very nice to me-even though he knew my shoes were cheap he treated me like a queen. And I tipped him well.
