Mother fights off polar bear to save children
Last Updated Fri, 10 Feb 2006 10:48:46 EST
CBC News

A woman in a northern Quebec community was shaken and scared, but otherwise safe, after facing down a polar bear to save her children.

Lydia Angiyou, 41, was attacked by the bear on Wednesday night in Ivujivik, a community of 280 people on the northern coast of the Quebec mainland.

Angiyou was with her seven-year-old son and two other young boys when they came across the bear. She says all she could think of was stopping the animal.

2. Whoa, that must've been terrifying as hell
Don't about 50% of polar encounters result in attacks, or some brutally huge percent?

6. Can you not put yourself in the place of bears ...
and so many other animals whose habitat is being destroyed and/or highly degraded? How DARE these animals fight back to their MASTERs! Don't they know any better? Resistance is futile!! If these ANIMALs, these TERRORISTs, don't learn their place, we won't have any choice but to EXTERMINATE them!

9. Calm down Francis,
Polar Bears have bee a threat to any humans they encounter for thousands of years--just like humans are a threat to them. It's totally a predator/prey relationship--and neither side is going to consent to being prey.

And just for kicks, while I am pretty certain all here are in favor of all habitat preservation, who is ready to volunteer to be the first martyr in the cause?

11. Oh, good grief
the bear wasn't fighting back to his master. He was trying to eat the kid. What part of carnivorous predator didn't you get?

17. I apologize for being deliberately provocative and hijacking the thread
but I was curious if anyone would express empathy for the plight of this bear (and also bears in general) and beyond that the plight of endangered animals worldwide. I recognize now this was not the thread to raise those concerns, but the subject I had in mind was empathy for the oppressed, especially when the oppressed is not human.

19. Not to worry. DU is rife with conservationists, including...
me, when animals are unnecessarily threatened.
