PEOPLE READ THE DAMN RULES BEFORE YOU COMMENT: Kwan

Alternate plans
In January, Long Island native Emily Hughes placed third at the 2006 U.S. Championships, behind Sasha Cohen and Kimmie Meissner , and shortly afterward was named first alternate for the U.S. Olympic team. Michelle Kwan successfully petitioned for a provisional Olympic berth after missing Nationals with a groin injury, and on January 27th she proved to a special panel that she deserved the Torino spot; Hughes remains the alternate. However, the U.S. could substitute Hughes for Kwan as late as three days before the ladies' competition begins in Torino -- Feb. 21 -- as long as the International Olympic Committee and International Skating Union consent. "I'm just going to go home and train hard and whatever happens, happens," Hughes said after being named Olympic alternate. "I'm just really happy about what happened tonight. We'll see what happens in the future."

So stop this nonsense about how Kwan screwed it up if she drops out and she took away Emily's chance. I'm sure lil Emily is in Torino practicing her heart out just in case she needs to step if Kwan has to drop out.

I've seen half a dozen DUers post like US will only have two competitors if Kwan drops out and I can't believe anyone doesn't realize that IT'S NOT FEBRUARY 21ST YET so don't let your panties get all bunched up your buttholes worrying about it.

1. To quote Katherine Carpenter:
"Don't get you knickers in a twist. Nothing is solved and it makes you walk funny."

2. Good post, Lynne.
I wish people would shut up about Kwan.
I would've put her on the team too. She is clearly the best US female skater. You bring your best.
She just happens to be hurt, which is unfortunate and sometimes entirely out of your control.

IF she can't go, Emily will and I'm sure she will do very well.

3. !
You mean there was an incident regarding Kwan?!

I copycatted a long-running series of copycats and thought nothing of any underlying problem.

5. They knew she was hurt before they put her on the team.
Which is going to be the reason by which Emily won't be able to compete (most likely) even if Kwan withdraws.

yourself. Cause you clearly did not.
"If Kwan chooses to withdraw, it is far from clear that the designated alternate, Emily Hughes, would be allowed to take her place in the Olympic women's competition that begins Feb. 21.

An International Olympic Committee provision allowing late replacements under "extraordinary circumstances," such as injury, illness or death in the family, may not apply in this case because Kwan's injury was pre-existing, according to U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel.

"I don't think there is much precedent here, so there is not too much to go on as to what `extraordinary circumstances' means," John Hughes, Emily's father, said Saturday from his Long Island home. "We hope Michelle is OK."

There are no plans to bring Emily Hughes to Italy on a contingency basis "because there is no place for her to train," her father said, adding that she is training full-bore for her appearance at the World Championships in mid-March."

So, those are the rules. Because of her pre-existing condition, even if Kwan withdraws, Emily probably won't be allowed to compete. And Emily is not in Torino. She wasn't send to Torino, and she is at home training for the Worlds.
