Ok, who is going to apologize to me first? re: Kwan & Hughes
I was pretty much told I was told I was the one giving misinformation about the fact that if Michelle Kwan pulled out of the Olympics that she would be replaced by Emily Hughes

It would be very much appreciated either in this thread or through private PM an apology to all you people who screamed at me that Kwan dropping out would mean that only two US skaters would skate.

I mean, we choose an alternate - what the hell would we do that if not to have her there to replace an injured skater who could not compete.

I mean, I'm not an expert or anything, just put 2+2 together and figured if Kwan dropped out with enough notice that she could be replaced by Hughes and sure enough.....

Her withdrawal will now allow Emily Hughes, sister of 2002 Olympic champion
Sarah Hughes, to participate in the women's competition which begins on February 21.

Geez, who would have thunk it

1. I will apologize, dearheart....
...even though I don't know what happened. I was busy defending Debi Thomas at the time. :loveya: I'm sorry.

2. No, you're fine! I'm just being pissy
Every kept yelling at me that Kwan screwed it up and only two girls would skate now and she basically screwed over Emily Hughes.

I kept wondering why the hell we have alternates if not to replace those who could not compete. I even told someone she was misinformed and yet it turns out I was right

Go figure

4. NO! You can't be right!!! That would be WRONG!
;)

It would make sense that we choose alternates to replace those who might not be able to compete. I can't believe somebody told you that you were wrong..

You're only wrong when it comes to football teams and movie actors and the like...:loveya:

6. Didn't you also claim Emily was in Italy training?

"If they call me, I'm ready," Hughes told WNBC-TV in New York in an interview Saturday before Kwan announced her withdrawal. "Just point me in the direction and I'm there."

Getting here could be a challenge, though.

The 17-year-old Hughes learned that Kwan had withdrawn at 8:45 p.m. EST Saturday, too late to catch a flight. And a major snowstorm was bearing down on the East Coast, with blizzard warnings posted for the New York City area, where she lives. Dozens of flights were canceled at the city's three major airports.

USOC spokesman Darryl Seibel said Hughes would be on her way to Turin "as soon as it's practical.""

Well, she is not. She can't even fly out yet because of a storm.
And if Olympic Committee really stuck to the rules, they might have not approved the replacement at all, because Kwan had a pre-existing condition. Which US knew perfectly well, but still decided to send Kwan in.

7. Hey, I was wrong there but still right that she can compete
Geez, everyone was screaming like banshees that poor little emily was screwed out of being able to compete because of some bizarre rule that alternates can only compete through divine intervention of God.

8. The rules are that pre-existing conditions are not
grounds for replacement. Committee obviously did not follow the rules, or decided that whatever injury Kwan sustained was new and not pre-existing. WHile it was clear as a nose on anyones face Kwan was not ready to compete in the Olympics when she asked for that medical exemption. But of course now Kwan got lots of attention. For a competitor that had snowballs chance in hell of winning gold that sure is a great accomplishment.

14. They hadn't reached deadline day yet
The Ladies event is over a week away. The US team has until a day or two before the event to name their final team.

17. Yup -- until 2/21... and the OLympic Committee has already approved Hughes
Of course they would. There's no reason they wouldn't. It was a fait accompli.

13. Of course you were right, Lynne
And, people also aren't getting that if it wasn't for Kwan, only two women would be skating anyway -- Cohen and Meissner. Not Hughes. Kwan's placing at the World's is allowing Hughes to skate.

You're right, and you ROCK.

12. Thank you LostinVA! I went out and did not want to kick up that
thread this AM. Debi Thomas is, and always will be, one of the most stunning skaters of our time. All that and a full course load too. :toast:

16. I said something on the Kwan thread
But got pissed at all of the very strange nastiness directed toward Kwan -- who has always been a real sport and athlete. BUt the THomas thing made me nutso. Witt probably deserved the gold... probably. But, THomas was a fantastic skater, and in frigging MED SCHOOL. Her Carmen was great... even if she didn't have all access to East German facilities and drugs. And yeah, we need to face it: Katrina Witt (whom I like) was probably unknowingly drugged to the eyeballs. The East Germans were notorious.
