Did you have a dad or granddad who wore suits, or ties, at home? |
|
I was wondering about that today. Looking at old photos (not of my family, but older photos), men - at least professional men - were almost always in suits. But even a lot of craftsmen, farmers, and others used to wear suits a lot, though not necessarily at home.
My grandfathers were not suit guys, nor was my dad. Dad had a job for a year or so at the plant that required a tie, but other than that, he pretty never wore a tie, let alone a suit, unless to a funeral or something really special.
Perhaps its just the lie of the pictures, but it seems that in the old days, a lot more men wore suits, and wore them a lot more often, even at home.
Did you have that experience growing up?

1. Nope. As soon as Dad came home, the jacket and tie came off. |

Only Ward Cleaver and Dr. Alex Stone sat around the house reading the newspaper with their ties still on...right?

I find that when I come home with a suit on, I tend to keep it on for a while, and then eventually move to the pajamas.
How about at holidays? Did your dad wear a tie, say, on Christmas morning opening presents? Or on Thanksgiving?
In my extended family, that would be totally weird, and get some pretty odd looks. But, if I had a family of my own, that would likely be the norm.

(We did our present opening on Christmas Eve, and we just did stockings on Chrismtas morning).
Actually I shouldn't say a flat-out "no", because my dad does have a few novelty Christmas ties that he sometimes puts on for Christmas Eve, and he always used to wear a tie to Christmas Eve church services even if he hadn't had one on all day.
There are an awful lot of pictures of him wearing sweaters on Christmas, though, sans tie.
He never wears a tie on Thanksgiving.
Also, he retired four years ago, and now he doesn't wear a tie unless he really believes the occasion warrants it (wedding, funeral, that sort of thing).

5. I only know one of my grand-fathers |
|
He still wears a tie most of the time, though not usually a suit. My own father has been known, though not frequently. I am never seen in public without some band of silk around my neck (tie, bow-tie or cravat), and have one on for most of the time in private as well.
