My kids' school principal called me this morning at 6 am.
To tell me there was a 90 minute delay.

This didn't make me happy.

Should I be more appreciative?

1. At least you got a call!
and did not show up to find this out.

2. Well, considering over 200 schools in our state got cancelled
today, who would not look at the news to see the status of their school?

I just can't see this call as a convenience.

4. Perhaps he was operating on the fact that many people do not have
power, and cannot tune in to the TV.

5. No power losses in town. The school has a new phone
distribution system that was originally implemented to alert parents to emergencies.

Now I'm getting automated calls about school meetings, when report cards are coming home and now this. I guess it's just me, I find it as intrusive as telephone solicitors.

7. I don't watch tv in the morning or listen to the radio.
Maybe he was just trying to help those who may not have seen the news.

10. So, if you got 2 feet of snow and had kids you wouldn't look
at the tv or listen to the radio to see if there was school or not?

11. I think people with kids in a location where it just snowed
2 feet would either watch tv or listen to the radio to find out if there was school or not. It's not a matter of watching tv, it's a matter of getting information that pertains to your life.

13. so then would you not have been up already? What is the harm?
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 12:04 PM by kick-ass-bob
I don't understand the problem in having someone giving people information.

I think you need to shift your priorities. If you don't need it, just shrug it off. Someone may have needed that call.

15. I was already up, already knew and went back to sleep.
Um, no I don't need to shift my priorities. The system was purchased because we had a lockdown and it was to alert parents to emergency situations at the school. That's not what it's being used for, this is not the first non-emergency call from the school.

I understand that it is one of life's little annoyances, just as phone calls from telephone solicitors are.

19. Obviously you were not interested in the answer to the question you asked.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 12:45 PM by kick-ass-bob
So, why did you ask a question if this was just a rant?

I find THAT annoying.

Especially attacking people's opinions on the subject after you ask for opinions.

That, actually, fucking sucks.

21. Not one person here gave me a reason why I should
appreciate it.

Second, is there something wrong with disagreeing with a point being made - it's considered an attack?

The only thing that came close to an attack was on you for telling me you think I should shift my priorities - which I consider an attack.

23. because you conveniently bring in another piece of the story you didn't
share before.

Snow. Added.
On TV? Added.
Power out? Added.
Sleeping again. Added.

You have an excuse for everything.

What if you hadn't seen the news? What if your cable is out? WHAT IF you did not have power?
What if you were not as well off to have all these conveniences of life that you so obviously have?

I said 'why let it bother you?' You seem to WANT to be inconvenienced, so, your wish is granted.

Thinking "shift you priorities" as an attack just proves this point.

24. And you seem to have the most negative view of someone
you don't even know. I will take the point that I didn't spell out every detail in my first post, I guess because there was bad weather that was in the news yeterday I assumed most people would think a 90 minute delay was because of weather - my mistake.

But to take my failure to provide details in my first post as "excuses" or as ammunition I was saving to shoot down arguments assumes the worst, thanks for that.

25. All I said in the response about priorities
is basically you are letting something that could help someone else bother you, and maybe you shouldn't let it. But then you kept going on about how it did. You create your own reality by responding to certain things in certain ways, so you have to live in it. You can enjoy it or not, makes no difference to me.

But, if you shifted your priorities, then this wouldn't bother you.

The view I took of you was only after seeing how you responded on this thread to everyone - very defensively. All you did was post reasons why what they said was wrong.

I call 'em as I see 'em.

28. By you saying that I should shift my priorities it came across
as I have no right to be annoyed by this - and I do.

If there was no do not call list, would you tell someone who was annoyed by telemarketers to shift their priorities or would you agree that telemarketers were annoying and chime in?

I didn't feel defensive nor was it my intent to prove anyone wrong - there is no wrong or right. There are people who would appreciate the call (everyone on this thread) and those who don't (me).

I'm not really interested in arguing with you any further, we're only going in circles. Believe it or not, even though the call ticked me off - I will get over it. That's the way annoyances work.

26. I gave a reason
I did not know you had power, but even if you did, it is a courteous thing. I wish the schools here would have the same courtesy...rather than us having to rely on the news media, who get half of every thing wrong anyway.

9. I live in a very poor area.
Not many people have the internet; few have cable. These poor people would love to have a heads up from the school.

Teachers in my district have a call system to let them know about delays, et al.

If it really inconvenienced you, please let the school know that they no longer need to inform you of delays, and that you no longer wish to be telephoned regarding delays.

12. I am going to check with them to see if their phone system
is capable of multiple distributions so I can be called only for emergencies (I tend to doubt it though).

There is always the radio if people don't have internet or cable.

you already have internet, tv, and radio to keep you up to date... There is no need for the school to call you.

20. again, in the inner city, it happens all the time
single moms need to get to work, roads look ok, kids go off to the bus, mom goes to work, school is closed, apartment is locked...

I used to work for CPS (child protection service), it happens all the time.

Sometimes, the mom is a crack head looking to get rid of her kids, sometimes it is a working mom that had too much on her mind...

Peace and low stress!

22. Yes I understand the situation where I live is not the same as
the situation where many others live. I wasn't really asking whether this idea was a good idea on a national basis. And I really don't have a problem with the schools alerting people about all kinds of things on an opt-in basis or even an opt-out basis.

32. I learned a lesson today too... a very mixed up one
Not only did I get an electric valentine here at DU, but someone also gave me a "star".

I found out that a DU poster that I did not like is actually a dem, and not a freeper (if you don't know, a freeper is someone who should really be posting at freerepublic.com , a conservative site). I really thought he was a freeper, but he is a dem, true and true (through and through).

I found out that threads could be banned for pointing out how legislation will negatively effect third parties (read: the green party).

I found out that thread can be banned if they are worded a certain way, and support a third party candidate (even though the candidate is endorsed by the DNC). The thread was locked due to posts by the guy I mentioned above.

Anyway, stick with DU...read some more of it...I hope you enjoy it here...peace and low stress,
mdmc
