I'm a proud member of the American Bar Association
We lawyers get bad press quite often, but it's time to give some props. The American Bar Association just said Bush's wiretapping "exceeds his powers" and formally opposes any future government use of wiretapping without warrants.

1. Everyone hates lawyers until they NEED one
And then it's "my lawyer says this" and "my lawyer thinks that".

An amazing turnaround!

2. You got that right

Sometimes you need an asshole in your corner fighting for you.

P.S. Not that our beloved huskerlaw is an asshole. Quite the contrary. But perhaps huskerlaw is vicious in the courtroom.

3. I'm never in a courtroom...
but most of those courtroom assholes are actually very nice in person. Not all of them, mind you. But most. ;)

5. Quite true
sometimes the turnaround is even in the same sentence:

"You're a lawyer? God, you must be a bitch. By the way, I have this legal problem..." Gah!

15. I don't. I know lawyers are our only chance to
defend ourselves and argue key points in cases that can make the country better. Lawyers may in the end be the ones who save us from this horrid administration in charge right now.

18. Thank you for saying that
and I agree. It is very likely that lawyers will be the ones who save us from ourselves and rid us of BushCo.

6. It's amazing how defensive we get
when people start shitting on things like the Constitution and the rule of law in general. Especially when that person never went to law school. ;)

10. I'm only an asshole to assholes.
And sometimes not even then. Professionalism is the key.

13. Damn! Are you one a them "trial lawyers"?
Down here in The Heart of Dixie everybody's always raggin' on them "trial lawyers".

Repug about a Democrat opponent: "Uh course he's supported by the TRIAL LAWYERS".
The shame!
"Thuh TRIAL LAWYERS are lobbyin' to get this bill passed and LINE THEIR POCKETS!"
"High malpractice insurance rates are a DI-reck result of the TRIAL LAWYERS."

"Trial lawyer" has been demonized just as much as "liberal".
Lemme tell you, some people hate 'em till they need one.
When you are facing some deep, serious, ca-ca, whether your're guilty or innocent, a good litigator is worth her weight in gold.

My son-in-law is one, and hats off to them.

16. I'm not a trial lawyer
but many of my friends are. And they get a horrible reputation. Unfortunately the entire group is defined by the few ambulance-chasers among them.

Remember how the media and the Repubs tried to smear Edwards with the trial lawyer label? Yeah, sure, he's evil...if you consider suing a company in the following situation to be evil, that is:

Company A builds swimming pool pumps.
Company A has been sued (and lost) many times because the pool pump is defective.
Many people have been injured due to Company A's defective pumps.
Company A knows that the injuries could be life-threatening.
Company A doesn't do jack to fix the defect.
Little Girl goes swimming in a pool that contains one of Company A's defective pumps.
Predictably, the defective pump malfunctions.
Due to this malfunction, Company A's pump sucks Little Girl under water.
Little Girl's hair gets stuck in Company A's defective pump.
Little Girl nearly dies.
Little Girl suffers extensive brain damage. She will never walk again. She will never talk again.
Big Bad Trial Lawyer helps Little Girl's family sue Company A.
Little Girl's family wins one of the biggest settlements in history.

Who's the evil one? Company A? Or Big Bad Trial Lawyer?

...and yes, that was one of Edwards' cases.

Been wondering when this would happen. Mighty proud to be a lawyer - but then I always have been.

since there's only one reasonable way to read the law, I was hoping they'd come through for us. Thankfully they have. :toast:

22. I commend them.
Us lawyers have to put up with a lot, but what's more gratifying than see someone who denigrates lawyers, ask them for help.

My grandfather, also a lawyer, always used to say "So long as people try to avoid doctors and lawyers, people will always need doctors and lawyers.
