Poll question: Middle school aged daughters? |
|
OK - my son 12 "like likes" a girl (for the first time) and wants to give her a Valentine.
:loveya:
Here's his dilemma - he's a back-to-nature, vegetarian, animal-rights, make it yourself type of kid - so his first instinct is to "make" a Valentine . . . but . . . he's afraid she might think a homemade one is "cheesy" and childish. BUT - he's afraid if he buys one, he'll look superficial.
:dilemma:
He's particularly concerned because he hasn't told her he "LIKES" her, and is afraid she'll stop being his friend if he "creeps her out." I've heard through connections that she "likes" him, too, but he doesn't believe me! He thinks I'm just saying that to make him feel better.
So - if you have a daughter 12ish - let me know what she thinks, 'k?
If you don't have a 12yo daughter - well - comments welcome, but try and be nice. :)

1. My daughter loves the homemade ones |

She's older now but she still loves to get handmade gifts from her boyfriends.

I personally would take a homemade over a store bought ANY day. But then again, I obviously have a similar mindset to your son, to belong to DU. :D ;)
However, I DO think that most girls DO like homemades just fine, so long as they aren't really, well, you know, "unhip"--i.e. lace, etc.
Good luck to your son and this first step towards his first romance!

I think she'd like the homemade one, too. After all he met her at a "how to survive in the wild" camp, she's a semi-vegetarian (she'd be a full veggie, but her mom won't let her), and she volunteers with an animal adoption group, too.
He's just very nervous about not "messing up his friendship".

3. I don't have a daughter |

but as I understand it he would definitely "creep her out" if he tells her he likes her. The proper protocol is for him to tell his friend to tell her friend to tell her other friend that he might like her...

Unfortunately, they don't really have any mutual friends (of the same age). He doesn't go to her school but they volunteer at a pet group together.

8. Homemade doesn't necessarily mean cheesy and childish |
|
and if she needs a Valentine that's bought in a store then she doesn't deserve your son.
And no I don't have a 12 yr old daughter but I use to be a 12 year old girl :-).

14. When I was in high school, |
|
my friend's boyfriend gave her a yellow bell pepper picked from his family's garden and one of his flannel shirts for Valentine's Day. None of us thought it was weird (except in retrospect).
I vote for something homemade. If he's worried it's not enough, he could get her a little box of chocolates or a flower to go with it. Nothing expensive or over-the-top.

19. I keep reading this as "middle aged daughters." |
|
And I want to reply that I AM a middle-aged daughter, but I don't HAVE a middle-aged daughter.
I have an 18-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old daughter, so I guess their average age is 12.
I'd say the homemade card is a nice idea, but that the girl isn't necessarily going to find him superficial if he buys a card. If he likes her and she likes him, any card from him is going to thrill her.

He could give her a "Friend" store bought card...simple one, and inside have a small handmade double heart friendship heart with an invitation to go (fill in the blank) re: movie, have a burger, skating, etc.

I like the invitation idea! - I'll tell him and see what he thinks. (Though the burger is probably out as they're both vegetarians! LOL)
Thanks!

a good kid! :hi:
He has decided that homemade is the way to go, but is still very anxious about the "reception" (What if she doesn't LIKE me, MOM..... )
We're going to drop it off at her house while she's at school - as that's the only time we can go by there today. He's going to be a nervous wreck all day, I can tell.

I've heard that she likes him, but he won't believe it until she indicates as such to him.
He has decided that he should just "be himself" - 'cause that's who he wants her to like. :)

"besides, if he is that kind of guy, then that is what he should do". There ya go, straight from a girl like-liking her first boy at this very moment! Good luck! (She is working on how to communicate today too!)

FYI - my son did decide to make the Valentine - it's not too fancy, nothing mushy - kind of a red-pink-white/Peter-Maxish-retro look. He also decided on a stuffed animal - a puppy (as they both volunteer for a pet group and babysit the puppies. Tough job, eh?)
We went to do the drop off at her house while she was at school, but SURPRISE - she was HOME from school sick. He was a wreck. . . lol . . . but he said she was smiling and looked happy and she said the puppy was cute.
He called her later this afternoon to see if she was feeling better and they talked a while. I then talked to the mom about an outing they're both going on - and the mom said the daughter really liked her Valentine's day present, etc. . . so all in all - I think it all went pretty well. (whew.)
So - THANKS! to all for the advice and suggestions.
P.S. He's going to ask her to go skating next time he sees her - IF he can keep his nerve up. :)
