3. Well, I love the country my mom used to listen to - but even though
I don't really care for country these days, I must admit that I like Martina McBride. I know this has absolutely nothing to do with what you asked, but I figured I'd share the Valentine's love with Martina.

Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and that Jllian girl, I can't think of her last name.

When I was a little kid in rural southern Ohio back in the Dark Ages, I remember hearing Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb and some other people. That's all that ever came out of the radio around those parts. Oh, and Johnny Ray.

51. It took 8 freaking posts for someone to name Bob Wills?
And of course it had to be done by a Texas gal! :hi: Maddy

And some others who I haven't seen named- WAYLON, Kelly Willis, Jim Reeves, Tom T Hall, Dolly Parton, Marty Ronbbins and Buck Owens. And though she is mainstream new country, I have to admit Faith Hill has a wonderful voice.

62. Yeah, I know he's kind of an odd choice
I guess he's kind of a holdover from when I listened to a lot of country radio back in Junior High school and he was my favorite artist! I don't really keep up with his stuff anymore, but I figured I owed him a mention since I was such a big fan at one point, owning several of his albums; he kind of lost me with that sappy Aerosmith cover he did...

Junior high? Wow I feel old now! I was old enough to see them and Clay Walker play at our local clubs- most of the time you could even get in for free. I guess that also colors my impressions of the 3 of them. :)

Sixteen Tons
Some people say a man is made outta mud.
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood.
Muscle and blood, skin and bones;
A mind that's weak and a back that's strong.

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older deeper and debt.
St Peter don't you call me I cause can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store.

The Carter Family: Will the Circle Be Unbroken

I was standing by my window
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rollin’
For to take my mother away.

Will the circle be unbroken?
By and by lord, by and by,
There’s a better home a-waitin’
In the sky lord, in the sky.

I told the undertaker:
Undertaker, please drive slow,
For this body you are haulin’
Lord, I hate to see her go.

I wouldn't exactly call these "country" per se but I wanna play:
Alejandro Escovedo
Old 97's (kinda poppy but still fun)
Wilco, both early and late, but the later stuff is definitely not "country."
Jay Farrar

oh, and of course, Neko Case

Oh, and Johnny Cash of course but that goes without saying.

p.s. but I have plenty of hearts so please don't give me another I just wanna play the game. :)

Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 11:35 PM by mvd
Right now -

Hank Sr.
Merle Haggard
Loretta Lynn
Patsy Cline
Patty Loveless (chose her based on sheer # of great albums I own by the artist - this spot could easily be given to the Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, or Emmylou Harris)

I like older and quite a bit of newer country. Those jingoistic country songs give the genre a bad name.
