Ever have a cat move the water dish?

My cat pulls it right in the middle of the road and I always end up kicking it. Why do cats pull on water dishes like that?

3. I wish I knew what was going through their heads - in my case, for dogs.

My wife once watched our big old samoyed/malamute/wolf mix gently pick up four individual dog crunchies, and place them in a square on the floor before going back and finishing the rest of his meal.

No matter how much they loved their dinner, this always happened... One would always eat most of their bowl and then back off and wait patiently for the other to finish eating most of theirs. Then they would trade off and eat the remainder of each others meals. Happened every single night for many years.

6. Dunno, but my former roommate had a cat that would knock over

the food bowl, then lay down on it's side to eat. Laziest thing I've ever seen.

8. My cat gets pissy when someone moves her water.

One time, we moved it to sweep that corner of the kitchen. She just walked to where her food/water was supposed to be and positively glowered at us. :scared:

She also spends more time splashing her paws around in her water bowl, like she's fishing, than she does actually drinking out of it. I think far more of the water ends up on the floor around her bowl than ends up inside of her!

She also splashes her paws around in the toilet. Which kind of surprised me... I figured any self-respecting cat would consider such behavior far too doglike and undignified to engage in!

12. My roomie's former cat (RIP)

Would bat the water bowl every time she went to drink from it. It seemed that to her the water had to be in motion for her to see where the surface was. Of course that meant the bowl would wobble and scoot all over, and the water would spill on the floor. Ultimately my roomie found a special tray that had bowls that clipped to the tray and therefore couldn't be batted around. Then the cat could only swat the surface of the water with her paw to make it move.

13. I've had two different cats who would always disturb their water before

drinking. One would slap at the bowl until the surface began moving, then he would drink. The other one sticks her paw in the water. For a while she would splash it everywhere before she started drinking, now she just swats at it.

I've half-concluded that it's something to do with still water. Animals know not to drink still water in the wild if they can help it, so maybe it's some instinct to so the surface move. Just a guess. It may also be hard for them to see the water unless it's moving. Clear water in a colored bowl just looks like an empty bowl, maybe.

Another thing my current cat does is swipe at the water stream while I'm pouring it into her bowl. Makes a big mess. Now I have to fill the bowl on the counter and lower it. This same cat swipes at faucet water if she can get on the counter, and whenever someone leaves the bathroom and the toilet is still running, she runs in and stares at the toilet until it stops.

I wonder what they think of our dietary habits...

gets the fucking thing shoved right out into the middle of the floor.

She's 21. I had hoped her physical energy would have waned by now.

only tastes good once it's been moved...over...HERE.

16. My cat tips the water bowl over

and spills the water all over the floor. I find out the hard way after I step in it with my socks all soaked.

17. Mine are insane with the water.

They spill it all over the place all the time. The kitten puts his paws in the water and splashes it all over himself and they both drag the bowl all over the room. I thought cats were supposed to have an aversion to water.

Why the pet stores are selling those water machines. Reminds them of a brook I guess. Don't know.

Actually - I like drinking from a running tap or brook too? Hmmm?

19. Funny story about that....

I used to have one of those set-ups with two stainless steel dishes in a wire rack. My cat always hits the dishes with her paws. One day, I'm sitting by the kitchen table and she's whacking away on her bowl when all of a sudden, the whole thing goes flying into the air. Food & water scattering everywhere. I look over. My cat is dripping water and shaking the wire rack off her foot. Somehow she got herself stuck to it.

Hilarity ensued.

20. My cat's don't, but my dogs do that.

The water dish is one of those huge affairs with the 7-gallon tank on top, so it's a little heavy for the cats. But when it gets low, the dogs will pull it over into the traffic area to get it filled. If that doesn't work fast enough, they kick it until the plastic tank detatches, then they use it as a drum. That usually brings someone to fill it.
