My daughters surgery update |
|
Thanks to all who replied and gave me good wishes about her surgery today. Wasnt on all day yesterday and this morning was out of the question - was up at 4am ugh. All is good and we got home about an hour ago and shes been sleeping since. Not going to bug her - I have her sleeping on the couch so I can keep a good eye on her.
We got there around 6 this morning, she wasnt scheduled to be in the er until 8. We got there and since she had a bad experience in another hospital last year she hates doctors and nurses - she screams when they come into the room. The nurses were fantastic with her even though she was screaming bloody murder and fighting with them. After they were done looking at her they let her play in the play room and she relaxed there. We were only there for about 20 minutes and she was talking to everyone in there - my social butterfly LOL.
So they called us back and they gave her this "kiddie coctail". He said it works in 98% of children and said it'd take effect in about 2 minutes. Two minutes came and gone and she wasnt slowing down at all.. I'm like great.. shes part of the 2%. About 10 min after taking it, she started giggling like mad. Im like umm.. Syd? She just cracked up. You'd say something and she'd look at you like wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I turn to my husband and said I think shes stoned. The nurses came over to check on her and she didnt even care. I'm like shes stoned and they just laughed. I'm like can I have some of that? LOL. Shes like you wouldnt believe how many parents ask us if they can take some home LOL.
So then the anesthesiologist came back and shes like its time and Syds just like ooooooooook and looking around and giggling. So we went back to the waiting room and I was a nervous wreck. Kept pacing, leaving the room, walking the hall and I finally came back and the doctor came in about 50 min later. He said all went well, and he said dont forget that I over corrected her eyes like we talked about so when you see them dont freak out and think I messed them up worse. They'll correct themselves in about 6 weeks and said he wants to see us next week. Then he said they'll call us when she wakes up probably in 20 min. So I'm on edge now waiting.
The phone rings and the nurse calls us and tells us we can go to the recovery room. As I stood up I hit my head off of a shelf they had on the wall  in a room full of people I was like oops and left promptly LOL.
She was groggy, sitting up holding onto the nurse and he gave me her and I sat down on a chair with her. She was still out of it at that point and didnt realize what was going on. We sat there and he checked her vitals for awhile and sent us to the short stay unit. We were there for a good 2 hours and she slept the entire time. Tried to rip the iv out of her hand countless times. Finally the nurse from the anesthesiology team came in to check on her and said shes good to go. This point she was quite ticked off at the iv and wanted to go home. The nurse came in and took her iv out and she screamed when he pulled it out (it does feel really weird) and we got her dressed and left.
So in the end, it all went well.. have to put drops in her eyes 4x a day and go back next week to see the doc. I really liked him - he makes you and your children feel really comfortable. I'd tell anyone to go to him in a heartbeat.
Thanks everyone for your wishes, prayers, and everything else! I really appreciate it! My lil stinker is doing good and I hope she not in pain when she wakes up - he said she shouldnt so thats a good sign.
Thanks again :) :) :)

2. WONDERFUL!!!!! You made it....you did it and so did she. |
|
That has to be one of the hardest mornings of your life. It is so hard to see them in a vulnerable state.
My lil stinkers have had a couple of procedures and they always got super cranky after the anesthesia.
I am so glad things turned out so well. Get some rest now.

Good luck with the eye drops!
My daughter (since she was about 2) balks at all medications, I cannot imagine having to put eyedrops in 4x a day. This is the little angel that it used to take 4 people to hold her down (she is VERY strong) and one person to adminster her nebulizer. When she was in the hospital for RSV at age 2.5, every time a doctor, nurse, or respiratory therapist walked into the room, she sat up, and said, "Bye bye." Unfortunately (in her mind) the mysterious gowned people would not leave when she said, "Bye bye."
Somehow she survived. She is much nicer to doctors and nurses now at 4.5, and it takes only me to give her a neb. But she still balks at all other medications (I think she has a memory of what Orapred tastes like, and so she is afraid of it.)

So even though I never wish surgery on any child, I rather her go through it so her eyesight is saved. She'll be able to see better to - not have to work as hard. He says its an 80% success rate and he feels she fits in the 80% so i'm hoping!!

3 days. I dont want it to get infected so its important for her to get them. I dont want to hold open her eye while I'm doing it so I put the drop on the corner of her eye and it makes its way in when she opens it. I hope this is ok.

51. That's how both of my sisters have done it. |
|
My nieblings have both had pink eye in the past year, and since they're a month shy of two and three months shy of five, getting them to sit still and take the drops was not easy.
My niece's mom actually did it while my niece was asleep - moving VERY carefully, putting the drop in, opening B's eye, and letting it close. But B sleeps like the living dead (she plays very hard and sleeps hard as a result).
Of course, when I've had to give drops, it is to the cats, and they're easy.... if you call three bath towels, two people and a box of band-aids easy.

I was very worried today between your daughter's eye operation and a family friend who had surgery to correct a badly healed amputation this morning (he's in recovery and doing fine, so it must be a good day to be getting better.)

48. He's going to be okay |
|
After the accident they tried to preserve his elbow so that he'd be able to use a prostetic, but from the beginning they knew that there was significant damage in that area and a higher amputation was a possibility.
It turned out the nerve damage prevented use of a prosthetic, so removing the damaged tissue at the elbow made sense both to get a cleaner wound than last time and hopefully to address his pain level, which was much more than expected.
Hopefully he'll heal better this time (the wound didn't close for years the first time and bled at the slightest bump after that) and in much less pain once he's healed up.

When my son went to the hospital for oral surgery a few months ago, the "drug cocktail" they gave him beforehand made him so loopy! He was saying the funniest things.

Shes complaining right now that it hurts - I'm going to give her some tylenol and I just put those anitbiotic drops in her eye telling her that it'll make it feel better. She screamed bloody murder when I put it in so I dont know if it burned or just getting a drop in the eye.

am not surpised she's balking at any turn when it comes to meds/eyedrops, etc. Even at age 2, when things are not in our control, we seek to control where we can with all the armor we can muster.
