Geographically where do most DU'rs come from?
I would have guessed that most would be from the east or west coast but I see so many from Texas and the south, it always suprises me. This must be a stereotype I have to get rid of.

My location isn't any surprise-Philly. Liberal and proud east coast city.

What about you?

9. it's like other parts of the country
Urban areas tend to be more blue; rural areas tend to be more red. Historically the exception has been the Upper Midwest (Minnesota and Wisconsin) where for reasons I don't really understand, there's a long tradition of progressive politics even in rural areas.

Not so much anymore, but a lot of small towns in the northern midwest used to be built around factories where everyone worked, and everyone would have been part of the union.

Just a guess . . .

7. Perfidious Albion.
Part of the brigade of British DUers.

More specifically Buckinghamshire, perhaps the most conservative county in the country - but the conservatives round here are definitely nothing like FReepers (thank goodness).

I think that the geographical spread across the U.S. is good; my guess is that those in more red-states are more inclined to seek out fellowship with similar people on-line from a feeling of isolation.

31. Different type of conservatism.
Rather than less or more.

For example, they're all pro-Monarchy (which is more conservative than most Americans), but they also at the least pay lip-service to the National Health Service (more progressive than American conservatives).

Also there's very little neo-conservatism here (except perhaps in the case of Blair and his merry men).

They tend to be socially libertarian - for example some Conservative Party M.P.s voted in favour of the creation of Civil Partnerships for gays.

But I think that the main difference is that the vitriol is far less here, we don't tend to advertise our politics. Also there isn't the anti-intellectualism of the FReepers.

43. They're mixed.
The Tory Party has made an attempt to appeal to ethnic minorities, gays, women &c., and they haven't tended to make much opposition to legislative efforts to assist minorities. But there are still plenty of crusty old men.

To take the issue of gays, under the last Conservative government the gay age of consent was lowered from 21 to 18; then under the current government it was lowered again to 16 (the same as for straight-sex), plus there has been the Civil Partnerships Act. Basically, things are going to move more quickly and further under Labour - but it's all in the same direction.

There is serious talk among Conservatives of how they can get more women into Parliament - with a serious aim of female candidates in half of their winnable seats.

Abortion is a non-partisan issue over here. It was legalised by specific Act of Parliament, rather than granted as a right; it is basically available on-demand during the early stages of pregnancy, then later if there is risk to the mother's life, the life of the child, or severe disability on the part of the child. There is no great attempt by anybody to change that, there is some demand for tinkering with the dates at which the on-demand part should end. All votes in Parliament are counted on the individual views of M.P.s (there is no attempt to impose a party view).

38. Any season changes are subtle.
A few trees do lose their leaves in Dec but most trees stay green year round. We don't get any snow in the winter but it does cool down nicely. Highs this time of year are in the 70's and some of our trees are getting ready to bloom in a few weeks.
I've always thought the season changes here are more about the angle of the sun and cooler temps.
Sometimes I miss the fall in PA. It was my fav time of year. But I'll gladly miss the fall to not have to deal with the cold and snow of winter. I prefer the heat of summer and boy howdy!! do we get heat here. I keep a pot holder in my car in the summer to use when fastening my seatbelt. The metal on it can get hot enough to cause burns... no kidding!!
I've always thought that the diversity of climates in America is one of the things that makes this country great!

64. I'm glad you liked Atlanta! We are a pretty friendly bunch down here!
I live in Athens, GA, home of the Univ. of GA. and a wonderful blue island in a red and purple sea!

We're mostly used to the humidity. When were you here? The summertime can be opressive for those not used to the heat and even for us Southerners at times. We really have to be so careful to drinkl lots and lots of water and keep electrolyte levels up when exercising outside in hot and humid weather. Mr. CB and I suffered from heat exhaustion last summer after working outside for hours at the farm where I board my horse.

If you think it's hunmid in NE GA, try visiting southern LA! Mr. CB is from there and it is extra steamy!

I'd love to visit Philly sometime. I've been to Chicago, DC and NYC but no where else in the Northeast or Midwest.

91. Atlanta sprawled out big time in the 1980s. There is no geographical
impediment to sprawl here (unfortunately) and very little public transit except in the cities. Everyone in GA has to drive almost everywhere.

Of course, Atlanta was burned during the Civil War so they had to start over again. Atlanta began as the intersection of many railroad lines. Ironically, passenger rail is a thing of the past in GA (since the late 1960s-early 1970s) except for a few AMTRAK routes. We are trying to get passenger rail back. I grew up in Chattanooga, TN which ironically has NO train service now. :(

Athens has a bus system (doesn't run on Sundays though) and the UGA bus system and some bike lanes along with a Greenway trail linking parks and natural areas with the city and UGA. We're slowly making progress int he alternative transit area.

We're going to NOLA for Mardi Gras this year and to visit our family there! My sister-in-law is still repairing her home all these months later. We're going to spend our money in local restaurants eating yummy LA food! My sis will cook up some great authentic Cajun dishes for us too!

I look forward to eating a real Philly Cheese steak one day and seeing the historic sites there! :)

131. The area I'm in is definitely
though we're just starting our second cold spell of the winter.

We had one that lasted less than a week, before Christmas.

Sunday was 11c/52F.

Tonight, it'll be -25c/-13F. Windchill -36c/-33F. x(

Luckily, it's only supposed to last a couple of days. It's been above freezing (celsius)for most of the winter. :hi:

133. Gack! YES
It becomes immobile and I can't move!

I remember about 10 years ago...I took the bus to some gawdforsaken area of the city...it was very sunny, but the temp was about -25c, windchill around -35c.

I did my business at the intended store, then waited and waited and waited for the bus...I didn't know it only came once an hour, and had just missed one! I became so cold, my face so immobile and the sun was so bright I actually started to hallucinate. :scared:

And I did this...WHY?? I had a car!! :wtf:

I have learned since, though sometimes cars can be finicky starting at -30.

77. Overseas? Actually it was more like 'on the sea'...
Yes, I spent quite a lot of time at sea on deployment. In total I was deployed four times and entered eleven different countries ranging from Norway to Thailand.

I actually kept count of how many days I spent at sea (yes, I was that bored) and the total came to 463. The longest continuous stretch was during the Iranian hostage crisis in '79-'80 when I was at sea for 66 days without seeing land.

90. Just about any of them
I have actually been to several places after my service ended, mostly Europe. While as a student in Germany I was able to go into Eastern Europe after the collapse of Communism. Prior to this time I could not. I had a friend who immigrated to Hungary in 1984 and he invited me to come for a visit. My request for a visa was declined because of security clearances, etc.

Thanks for supporting a vet. Many people here (in SC) think I'm a repuke because of my time in the Marines but they find it difficult to understand that it was the Marines which turned me more to the left than anything else. Prior to this time I was rather apolitical.

97. I support all service members
I grew up middle class Irish and it was drummed into my head that policemen, firemen and servicemen were heros and deserved respect and thanks. It had nothing to do with politics. It pisses me off when people assume I don't support the troops just because I don't support the war.

As far as the Marines turning you left I think that makes sense for any thinking person who sees war/conflict to want to avoid it in the future.

144. It is, we enjoy having four distinct seasons...
and I work outdoors for a living, so I get to enjoy each season first hand every year. Politically it's a little too red for my liking, but I have a feeling we can flip a few races locally this year.

146. We like the seasons here too
Especially with a winter as mild as this one :D

You guys get good foliage-better than we do even. Nice one working outside-sounds like heaven after being stuck in the office all day.

Grand Forks and Fargo, each having their own state university, are fairly liberal. The rest of the state isn't. Although all 3 of our elected officials are democrats. That's right.....I said all 3.

I'm VERY liberal and dearly love the south. My best friend, another southern liberal, dogged me forever to join the ACLU, which I did.

There are a lot of us down here, and we are starting to come out of the woodwork.
