What do you do for a living?
Or if you're like me, what should you be doing instead of goofing off here in the DU Lounge?

Me, I'm a CAD technician (computer draftsman) in the surveying and mapping trade primarily. I do a little bit of civil work sometimes but not very much.

16. pretty much
The twins are napping and my three year old is happily playing with his toys without interference from "the babies" - a very nice, quiet time of day. Nothing is being thrown, no one is climbing on anything. No fighting over anything.

The other day my husband said he felt like that guy in the commercial who is at work surrounded by all the chimpanzees jumping around. My boys do have a touch of cabin fever and need Spring to come soon :-)

11. What should I be doing?
Right now I'm good. Daughter #1 is at work. Daughter #2 is at school. Son has his head buried in an activity book.

There is a load of laundry in the washer and one in the dryer. The beds are made. The floors need to be swept and vacuumed, but I usually do that later in the day to minimize the chances of having to do it again. The dishwasher has been emptied and reloaded. I did an hour and twenty minutes of vigorous exercise first thing this morning, and I've already run a couple of errands and filled the car with gas.

In twenty minutes, I have to leave to pick up daughter #2 at school. When we get home, we'll all eat lunch, then leave for Girl Scouts. While daughter #2 is at Girl Scouts, I have to make a delivery for daughter #1 at work. By the time I'm done doing that, it will be time to pick up daughter #2. After we get home, I'll change laundry loads and fold/put away the dry stuff. By then, I'll need to clean the litter box. I'll eventually sweep and vacuum, and then it will be time for daughter #2 to finish up her week's homework, which will be due tomorrow instead of Friday because there's no school on Friday. I'll get prep work done for supper, then it will be time to leave to pick up daughter #1 at work, unless she calls me to tell me she doesn't need a ride (which would be nice).

When the laundry's done, I'll iron a couple of shirts, then finish folding and putting everything away.

That's pretty much all that's on my list today - I did closets earlier in the week, bathrooms are clean (except daughter #1's, and that's HER responsibility), I already did the post office run, and paid and filed the bills.

Right now I'm enjoying the quiet and a cup of coffee. It's that lovely lull in between the running around.

I hope to take some time later to do a little writing. I'm planning on not winning the Writer's Digest Annual writing contest again.

to talk to. He has a PhD in research psychology and was recently forced to retire by the State of MO. He's only 50-something but his age plus number of years of svc are more than 80 so he was encouraged to take his pension.

Well he's looking for another job and had an interview. He has not had to interview for a job since the late 70s or early 80s. He had no idea how to answer some of the questions, one of which went like this:

How do you handle conflict?

I told him they weren't looking for a real answer but wanted his response to be responded as a positive, how did he take a negative situation and turn it into a positive situation for all concerned. He wants to know how to answer that question.

The last job I had was managing a high volume ice cream store.
I've had various jobs from investigating reports of child abuse to selling encyclopedias door-to-door when I was 18. BTW I handled that job so well that within months I was hiring and training my own sales crews. $$$ I loved commission selling. It's taking quite a bit just adjusting to a laid back way of life.

62. Wow, that brings back memories, hard-bond encyclopedias
Every household had a set back when I was a kid. What else could you do before the Internet if you needed to write a report for school on North and South Korea or India? Sometimes though I'd get a "D" on my reports as the teacher would know I just opened the book and started copying what was written. There were some pretty big words in there that a fifth grader would have trouble knowing the meaning let alone how to spell correctly. Still I think I did benefit as I did read what I was writing by hand versus now someone "Googling" and article and then "copy and paste" it into a report for school that most students do now on PC.
I think our family had the what was called "The Book of Knowledge" encyclopedias with the white hardcover binding.

173. At my paper, not at all...
And, hell, this is really going off topic with this thread, and could be its own lengthy thread, but I really don't think there's even as much of a rightwing bias in the media as a lot of us think. In broadcast media (mind you, I'm a print reporter, and at an alternative publication at that) the largest bias, far and away, is toward sensationalism. And even that can be broken down to say the largest bias is toward whatever will get the best ratings.

FOX News gets way better ratings than CNN. Like it or not, it's just the facts. And FOX News is notoriously conservative. Thus, other media movie to the right -- not because of any loyalty to conservative political philosophy -- but because of the belief that such a move will result in greater ratings.

We can even break it down further than ratings. Ratings, in and of themselves, don't really mean anything for the business of news. But, the higher your ratings, the more you can charge for advertising. In the end, its not about conservativism, or sensationalism, or even ratings themselves. It's about making the most money. As long as journalism is a for-profit, publicly traded business without any governmental controls, you will never, ever see a return to in-depth investigation. And it's not becasue reporters don't want to be the next Woodward and Bernstein. Every damn one of them wants to -- not out of any sense of upholding the public trust, mind you, but simply out of a desire to rise to the top of the profession; a desire that is existant in almost any profession, I would argue. At least among anyone with a love for their craft.

But no one cares. People don't watch long, in-depth investigations over police chases. The ratings (and therefore, remember, the money) prove this over and over and over and over again. Hundreds of thousands more people will watch the car crash on FOX News over the in-depth explanation of how faulty tires are causing car crashes over at Frontline.

So, the problem is two fold:
1) Journalism has become a money-first, for-profit business that puts cash ahead of upholdsing the public trust.
AND
2) The public are jaded, uncaring dolts that prove again and again the old journalism maxim "if it bleeds, it leads."

Until both of these things change, until journalism becomes a profession more interested in news than in profits and until the majority of the public actually starts giving a damn about real issues, you and everyone like you (by that I mean most of the people here at DU who are well informed and care about actual news events) will be completely disappointed by the media, especially broadcast media, where time constraints make it far more difficult to tell an in-depth story. This is one of the reasons the Internet has boomed as a news source -- it's not just the immediacy, althoguh that is a big factor. It's the simple fact that there are no limits on how long the story can be, or how in-depth. You can tell a story on the Internet that would take up an entire half-hour news broadcast, or even the entire front page of a paper, neither of which would be possible, of course, in those media.

WHEW! Sorry for the lengthy off-topic rant. Hope that partially answers your question :hi:

I agree with some of what you say. But, I certainly notice, and some polls back up my observations, that broadcast media is leaning right. The way Bush and Co. are treated is an example. The shooting incident is another. (Did you know Dick Cheney shot someone in the face?)

They are given a free pass with no significant questioning of their obvious and easily discovered lies. Another example is overabundance of right wing guests on the Sunday talk shows. And they are allowed to spew their talking points with little counter. Indeed, their talking points are reintegrated by the "journalists."

I agree that our society is easily distracted and has a shallow attention span and would rather watch Jerry Springer than Michael Moore. But then again, Michael Moore is not allowed in the main-stream media.

Again, I appreciate you response, Sorry for going off topic!

I use AutoCad to represent components for large telescopes.
I also use machine tools, welding machines and sheetmetal
tools to fabricate those components.
I am fortunate to work with world renowned scientists,
engineers, craftspeople and telescopes.

I'm in career heaven.

I think your job mixes the best of two worlds, intellectually stimulating work, and work that lets you physically craft and create things!

133. I've been waiting to tell this story on DU.
I was born in a small town, I wanted to be near my mother.

I was raised on a farm/ranch on the northern US prairie.
I have always been fascinated by the tools we humans
developed to gain an advantage over our environment.
I learned how steel, properly shaped could cause grain to grow.

That sounds dumb.

The implements my grandparents (homesteaders) and their children
used to sustain their families showed my how to adapt metal to
practical uses.

One of my grandfathers taught me blacksmithing.

Fast forward - - I'm working in an environment that
keeps me in touch with mt roots.

I've done very little mechanical work. I love CAD because it makes us smarter than we really are. For your work and mine it used take a room full of engineers to do what a CAD tech and one engineer can accomplish these days with the job specific CAD applications. I use AutoCad LDD version for everything.

I am a children's advocate. I have been advocating for those less fortunate for over 30 years (just my nature, I guess.) Up until the end of January, I worked for a highly structured, residential boys program (aka: bootcamp) as group counselor and case manager. I left because I don't "do" games, politics (work place, that is), nor will I be the scapegoat for incompetents SO, currently I am unemployed.
