That was the wierdest door to door salesman ever
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 05:23 PM by LeftyMom
The guy had a refrigerator truck and was selling steaks. He stopped at my door, talked to me and then drove off without trying any of the neighbors, so I guess my address was on some sort of lead list he had? :wtf:

I'm a vegan. Why the hell would anybody come to my house and try to sell me some meat? Maybe somebody gave them my name as a joke?

I'm confused.

Door to door meat? :eyes:

1. Was it Schwann's? They are active in parts of the midwest, I know,
and do door to door with meats, fish, and ice creams. Damned good stuff from what I hear.

6. Schwan's rocks
A little pricey because they bring it to you, but it's all good stuff.

They're out here on the Left Coast, too.

3. I had a friend that did that job.
They drive around and randomly knook on doors, in different places and tell people that "these orders were meant for another customer, but they skipped out on me, and left me with these steaks, so I just have to get rid of them. Tell you what, I'll sell them to you for half price."

You would be suprised how many people fall for it.

7. It's pretty common. They skip block to block before the word...
...gets out into the neighborhood about them.

4. Just steaks?
:wtf: We have Schwann's coming around selling food from a truck, but they have almost everything (we bought ice cream once on a whim). And they leave a catalog in case you want to have stuff delivered.

8. All he mentioned was steaks
I'm willing to bet if one showed interest they'd have other meat to sell, too. He damn near ran to his truck when I said the magic v word, so I didn't hear the whole pitch.

10. You may have not answered the door the last time they worked
your neighborhood. That's what they do here anyway, if you try and ignore them you go on a list to be hit the next time they're in town.

11. Do you ever get the furniture salesmen?
They drive around the block in a big truck full of furniture, and try to tell you that "the people who own this furniture skipped on their payment, and authorized them to sell the furniture at a fraction of what it costs."

I'm telling you, living in the suburbs, you see the funniest stuff...

17. The candy selling kids I don't mind.
They are usually from around the neighborhood, and are trying to raise money for a field trip or something.

19. We get a lot around here that I think are running scams
you ask what school program they're raising money for or anything like that and they get really vauge. The kids doing magazine subscriptions were like that too, but I think most everybody's wise to that scam now.

Anyone else, I just tell them "not interested" and shut the door.

15. "Would you buy raw meat from a guy in a truck?"
That happened to me a few years ago. Some dude with a truckfull of meat. Of course he "delivers to some of the best restaurants in town.". When I asked him which restaurants, naturally he wouldn't say.

So I asked "Would you buy raw meat from a guy in a truck?"

"Sure I would!" he said.

"Ya see...There's the difference between me & you."

Then he left.

16. We had one who we think was stealing dogs
He was creeping down the driveway toward our dachshund, who was tied out back while my mother hung out wet clothes.

She confronted him, and he said he was selling steak and seafood.

We read later in the paper that a lot of dogs were missing in the area.

Could have been a coincidence, but we'll always wonder. We live near a lot of laboratories.....

18. He may have been a buncher
My understanding is that they generally get animals from shelters, though. In some cases shelters are legally required to provide animals for experimentation.

22. We had a guy who offered to sell us some when
according to him, "someone in the neighborhood refused their order". They offered the meats to us at 50% off; but we didn't have enough freezer space for it.

25. A few years ago a steak salesman came by
I was the phone with a friend so I simply told the guy that I was on the phone and didn't want any. My friend asked me about it after I closed the door. He said that I should have bought some steaks because he had and they were a good deal.

26. Gotta be careful with these guys
See, they're part of a huge crime syndicate. They steal steaks from parking lots and residential streets, change the plates and ship them to Mexico where they're painted, then brought back to the U.S. for resale.

Oh, and they file off the serial numbers, too.

Some of them SOME, repeat SOME are f-ing crooks. They sell to food stamp clients, get their PIN number and card number then charge non-existent purchases. x(

But, some are legit as well.

28. that is weird.
we had a guy selling home improvement services knock on the door a few weeks ago. the company tries to sell you improvements then applies for a loan from the state for homeowners. you can get the loans without the construction company, they basically act like the middleman, getting you access to a loan program most people don't know about and they make money providing home repairs.

anyway, the guy does his whole thing and then mentions that his company has the license to sell in middlesex county. i told him he was in somerset county. he got this real confused look then said, "no, this is middlesex county."

i told him he was wrong, in fact our town is the county seat of somerset county. i told him he was about 5 miles from middlesex county.

he looked like he had been punched in the gut. "are you sure this isn't middlesex county? this is bound brook, right?", he asked again.

"nope. somerville, you're in somerset county."

"no", he tried again. "this is bound brook."

"sorry, man. i live in somerville. that's somerset county. bound brook is 15 minutes from here."

i guess it ruined his day. he had been out working my neighborhood all day with no idea where he was.
