Connoisseurs of Tequila Recommend Your Favorite

What is your favorite cactus juice? That drink of the Gods. That drink that makes you think you are Poncho Villa or dance on the hood of your car.

What is your favorite? Or, what is your favorite story involving tequila.

1. Wrapped my Austin Healey around a telephone pole
after drinking to much tequila.

3. Basically...
.. I've never had a 100% agave tequila that wasn't great. Never had any that wasn't 100% agave that was not rotgut.

Patron is probably my favorite :)

4. I love Patron. But have been working on a bottle of Don Julio anejo,
which is also damned tasty.

6. And while the tequila folk are here - a question
Just what is the difference between the silver, anejo, and that other type?

7. Reposado?

Reposado tequila is literally "rested" tequila, which means it is aged at least six months.

Anejo tequila is aged at least 12 months, usually in oak barrels, which imparts it with a slight golden colour. But that's all it means by itself. It could be aged anywhere from 1 year to 10 years.

White (or silver) tequila is not aged. Some of the lower quality varieties are litterally taken from the distillation process, cut with water to achieve appropriate alcohol content, and bottled.

Gold tequila (listen up all Cuervo fans) is silver tequila with caramel coloring, which sweetens the taste and cuts the harshness.

Note that some aged tequilas are also clear but are not categorized as white or silver because they are aged a certain length of time. The lack of color is due to the aging process, i.e. not aging in an oak barrel. Using a light, uncharred wood will generate less color. Heavily charred, oak barrels previously used to age whiskey or cognac are also used, and some of the flavor and a lot of the color of those spirits affect the tequila, usually in positive ways.

On the subject of caramel coloring/flavoring, even some aged tequilas have caramel coloring added. This does make them sweeter, but it also increases the likelihood of a severe hangover.

12. Patron Anejo ...

If I'm getting it in a local liquor store, that's the default. And I drink it like I drink scotch, neat and sipped.

For margaritas or any other mixed drink I use something like Sauza Reposado.

I prefer various labels that I get from Mexico, the names of which escape me at the moment. You can't get them in the US unless someone brings them in across the border in small quantities, i.e. the companies have no import agreement here.

13. if I could remember my story I'd tell you
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 10:40 PM by TheBaldyMan
IMO it was the Irish coffees before the mescal slammers that did for me. I do remember falling over backwards when I was trying to rack the balls for a game of pool.

btw I got the worm at the bottom of the bottle.

In my eye that is open, and my head is spinning.

Was the life of the party; I can't stop grinning,

I had too much tequila last night.

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime,
A D
Then I kiss all the cowboys, then I shoot out the lights,
A D
Then I dance on the bar, then I start up a fight.

Verse2:
Now wait a minute, thing don't look too familiar,
And who is this cowboy asleepin' beside me?
Well, he's awful cute, but how'd I get his shirt on?
I had too much tequila last night.
