Anybody know of any decent, cheap accommodation in NY?
I can't get over how expensive the US for hotel rooms. Seriously, even with the half-decent £/$ exchange rate US hotels are WAY more expensive than in the UK or most of Europe.

I'm probably going to be spending a couple of nights in Manhatten in late April (probably during the week, not weekend) and I'm struggling to find anything half-way acceptable for a reasonable price.

I don't need 5 stars but I do need a room with its own shower and bathroom, in a safe location in Manhatten. Does anybody have any recommendations? I'm really hoping to spend under $150 a night. I've tried Expedia, Opodo, Travelocity and a host of other websites and I'm also going to look at bedandbreakfast.com - any other sites I should check out?

Something really weird I spotted - at a Hilton in DC, if you stay Thur - Sun, staying the Thursday night actually makes your Friday and Saturday night room rate increase dramatically. What's all that about? I mean, I can understand them doing a weekend special rate, but it seems unreasonable to make you pay top dollar for all three nights if you stay Thursday as well.....

Thanks in advance.

P.

1. Does this mean that there are no cheap, decent places in NY?
Or are you all just ignoring me....

2. I'm not ignoring you, Pert, I just
don't have an answer. You mentioned every site I'd try.

No idea about boning guests who stay on Thursday, either. Sorry. :(

Good luck.

4. well, here's the thing
in DC, most travellers are weekday, expense accounters, who don't care that the room is $200 more on thursday.

In NYC, it's much the opposite, I understand.

You are going to be hard pressed to find a room in Manhattan, in April, that meets your requirements for that kind of money. The best I coud find on a quick search is the Milford Plaza at $169.

check out hotels.com as well.

12. Don't stay at the Milf Plaza
Ugh, we stayed there back in June last year and the place was a nightmare. It was the Milf Plaza because the last three letters had their lights burned out.

And the pillows beyond sucked. A giant rock would have been more comforting

23. The MILF plaza? Bloody hell....
I'm surprised they get away with that!

I'll avoid it and stay at the Yummy Mummy plaza instead...

5. Have you tried looking into individual hotels
I don't know either but I'm not in NYC. There are lots of people who may know here, I bet they haven't seen this yet. I'll kick it.

6. Cheers guys.....
One of the other things that gets my goat is that in the UK all prices include taxes....I'm looking on US websites and find a bargain and then suddenly realise that I'm going to get hit for taxes on top, and sometimes $25 per night for having a second person in the room.

Still, I suppose I should just accept it as a fact of life...Things are different over there!

9. Not with you......
I'm flying return for £285, including taxes....which can't be much more than $400. Do you now get reasonable fares over there?

21. it's actually almost $500
it's about $1.73 to the Pound these days.

I am looking at about $700 to fly to visit my sister in October (she's in Reading, I'm in DC) that's flying mid-week, staying two weeks. I might be able to get that down to about $600, if I wait. And that involves flying through Detroit, of all places. Going through a bucket shop, I can probably do around $550, but that's a bit sketchy for me and since my girlfriend is using miles, and I'd like to fly with her.

8. Check the Yale Club
It's a stodgy hotel that's normally exclusively for the use of Yale students/alumni. However, it's rarely booked full, and you can *sometimes* get lodging there even if you're not a member.

I put my parents up there a summer or two ago -- special summer rate was like $110/night or something. And the location's great -- right across the street from Grand Central.

It's nice, but a little creepy. Lots of marble and portraits of old, dead white men -- but if you're from the UK, you might be used to that sort of thing! (j/k)

One other thing to check -- I don't remember the name of the site that facilitates this, but there's a company here that sublets people's apartments like hotel rooms for a few days at fairly reasonable rates. (People working out of town for a week or a month or two put up their apts to recoup some rent monies). The advantage there is that you get an actual apartment with a kitchen and that sort of thing. Maybe someone on here knows the name of the website/company.

Anyway, there's a couple offbeat ideas for you.

11. We're staying at the Hotel Sanford and it's $139/night
of course that's +tax so it's about $161/night. It's located right by the Empire State Building.

13. Try Club Quarters in the theater district
and Hotwire can get you some amazing rates, but you won't know what hotel it is until you pay for the room. We use it a lot at my company and no one has had a BAD experience, just a couple of so-so ones, amid some amazing ones.

And there's always the Chelsea Hotel. Plus there are some fancy hostels where you get your own room and bath.

14. You really should not have a problem
There are plenty of hotels in the $150 per night range. As you said, tax is extra. I would not tell them there will be two of you when you make the reservation. Try the Hotel Pennsylvania, The St. James, The Portland Square, The Millford Plaza, The Howard Johnson MidTown for a start. These are all in the $150 per night range. None are better then 3 star, but I have stayed in the Penn, the HoJo and the Millford Plaza and they are safe and clean, but very old and dreary.

Look at Hotels.com for the best deals.

15. Try this one, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. . .
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 01:38 PM by DinahMoeHum
www.larchmonthotel.com

It's more a European-style guesthouse-pension-hotel than most, but it's in a good neighborhood with easy transportation access (subway, bus, walking). And free Continental breakfast, but lots of good restaurants within walking distance.

16. Sometimes the Washington Post travel section has listings.
I'm trying to remember the names of some of the more reasonably priced hotels they listed recently. I did a search and came up with the following link:

http://www.metro-home.com/

I haven't used these services myself (the last time I was in New York, I stayed outside of the city), but any idea is better than no idea.

Good luck!

17. Try Chelsea Lodge
http://www.chelsealodge.com/

Cheap, quaint, great neighborhood - My brother and his wife stayed there and thought it was great for the price. Chelsea is just above Greenwich Village (where I live) and a great location - very safe, lots going on, close to both uptown and downtown.

20. The Comfort Inn Midtown was pretty decent
It's on 45tht or 46th I think, steps from Times Square. Great theater district location and very reasonable when I stayed there a few years ago.
