Is it possible to strain your Lower Back Muscles from Coughing?!?
Because my back is killing me, but I can't understand why (other than the fact that I sit in front of a Computer most of the day, don't get enough exercise, and have been coughing a LOT since I accidentally sucked a bunch of NutraSweet into my lungs).

9. Yes, you can ruptured a disc in your back from coughing.
This is something I do know about it, I've had back surgery and chronic back problems---coughing (and I'm going through the flu cough right now too) can strain your muscles, damage the discs, cause the sciatia to flare up.

It helps me if I kinda curl up into a ball coughing and keep the knees bent. Good luck, I know it hurts like hell.

27. I herniated a disc coughing
It was in my neck, and I bent over and coughed very violently. I ended up needing surgery. (Many ouches!)

Now I'm very careful to keep my spine straight when I have to cough.

3. Yes, easily. You can even dislocate your jaw or shoulder coughing.
However, in all likelihood you either a.) slept on your back wrong and the cough was merely the tipping point, or b.) aggravated a different pre-existing condition with the cough. If it's lower back, you may be spending too much time in that computer chair.

5. Yep. And a sneeze can do damage too. Brother tore ligaments sneezing.
I know a couple of people who cracked ribs from violent coughing.

Take care of yourself. Go see a doctor if it doesn't ease up (coughing or pain).

6. Maybe.
When I lived abroad, there was a really bad flu that struck the country and they called it, "Rompe Huesos." It literally means breaking bones, because you'd get into such coughing fits that it felt like you had taken a beating.

What I have heard of, is people who were bending over the sink in the morning to brush their teeth and have sneezed, slipping a disc because of it.

7. Oh yeah.
It's one of the great risk factors for back injuries. Especially if you cough in a weird position. Can even cause a disc to rupture in the worst case.

10. yes, if your lower back is that soft
you should start doing just ten situps a day. Before you get back spasms.(worse than labor)

11. Oh it most certainly is.
Been there, done that.

Might I suggest regular exercise that includes a fair amount of stretching? It will help.

24. That was in the plan (New Years Resolution) but now I'll have to...
...take it a bit more slowly.

This is one of those things that Doctors don't really tell you, but should, that most lower back pain is due to strained Muscles, due to average, weak back.

Coughing hurt even more after that, obviously.

25. I don't know if this is in the book, but one of those "old" remedies...
...that I use on my legs sometimes, that really does help is, not just warm, moist heat, but Warm, moist, heat PLUS Epsom Salt!

Lot's of folk react with, "Epsom Salt!?!? Nobody uses that anymore." But they really DO work!

Soak a towel in mix of Warm water and Epsom Salt, then apply it to the effected area. Repeat for a few days, and you should see an improvement.

If you can, go to the doctor now. Thanks to that NutraSweet, you could be starting pneumonia. Crud in the lungs is nothing to ignore.
