Pay Pal E-Mail
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 07:55 PM by oneighty
Once again-I do not have pay pal.

The E-Mail requested credit card numbers bank account numbers all in order to keep my account up to date.

Do people fall for this scam?

I wonder.

1. Yes
If nobody fell for it, they wouldn't keep doing it.

Forward it to spoof@paypal.com.

5. People do fall for it
Last week we received one of those type of email's in a joint email account that we use in the Data center. The two fellows who were working at the time (and who are a lot more technically adept than I) did some investigating and were able to see the guy's files. I'm not sure this is right, but he was running Apache and left his directories accessible? They were able to see it through a web browser. The file where he was saving the information from the "fake" form was viewable and he had about 20 different names, social security numbers, credit card numbers and passwords in there. One women even put it in twice. We sent a copy of the link to Paypal. Hope they got the bastard, or at least notified the folks in the file that their info was compromised!

6. I received the official Dumbest Phishing Email of all time recently
Purporting to be from ebay, but the name on the mail said Mike@aol.com. I replied, "Sorry, Mike, but your use of aol makes it painfully evident that you're entirely too stupid to pull off a phishing scam."

7. it's called "phishing"....
... and you better believe it works.

Some of the letters are so good I have to poke around to figure out if they are legit or not.

Basically, hover your mouse over the link they want you to click. Be aware that the URL they are showing you on the screen isn't necessarily the same URL the link goes to.

Hover the mouse and see what the link really is. A common trick nowadays is to do something like this:

http:///paypal.scamster.com/?id=bozo@gothim.com&etc

The address looks like it goes to paypal but really it goes to the paypal subdomain of scamster.com. I get one of these things almost every day, they must work.
