Windows 2000 bootup problem question: |
|
Okay. I moved a motherboard/cpu/RAM/hard drive combo into a different case with different power source (long story).
But I have a problem when I boot up. During the initial boot sequence, the keyboard works, because I can use it to go into the BIOS and navigate the menu and change settings.
However, once the Windows 2000 login screen appears, the keyboard is nonfunctional.
This happens with both PS2 and USB keyboards, same thing. Hitting scroll lock and numlock don't do anything. When the keyboard is functional, during the early boot sequence, one of the keyboard lights is lit up. Nothing lights up once it's at the Windows 2000 login screen.
Any smart ideas on what the problem could be?
:argh: :banghead:

Check the BIOS settings for anything like PS2/USB port enabled or the like that might be related.
Check the keyboard works with another machine if one is handy.
Check the KB connectors from the MoBo to the case (even though that makes no sense if it works for the BIOS).
You may have a problem with drivers or support for USB keyboards or something like that. It's hard to see how it could work for the BIOS and not Windoze unless there is a problem with drivers of some sort, and it would seem like it would have to be PS2 or USB related unless you have an old 5-pin KB connector.
But, as you stated it, it's odd.

No real idea. When I was having some computer problems (I run 2k) a couple of times I had to unplug my keyboard at the login screen and plug it back in again (it's USB) for it to work, but only once or twice.

4. Maybe your keyboard driver went belly up. |
|
Try booting to safe mode and reinstalling it. Failing that, all I can suggest is the old tabula rasa…

5. What happens when you boot in safe mode? |
|
Does it or does it not recognize the keyboard?
If it does, go into device manager and delete it, then reboot.
It should force a reinstall of the device.

9. Most likely explanation from microsoft database is that Logitech mouse |
|
drivers screwed up something in the registry.
Solution is apparently to boot from CD rom, enter Recovery Console, and to disable keyboard and mouse filters.
I'll try it, we'll see...
