I have probably watched 8 hours of curling since the Olympics began |
|
I don't know what it is. I don't know why it exists. But damn if it isn't entertaining.

But I have no idea what is going on. The announceres NEVER explain anything. They use this jargon like we are supposed to know what's going on.

8. They've been doing a pretty good job explaining it between matches |
|
"Sliding out of the hack and getting the rock into the house on the skip's ice is tough, especially when you have to get past the guards or if you need to do a takeout." Jargon, what jargon?
I've learned a lot more about the sport than I did four years ago. I'm not looking three moves ahead like the Olympians are, but I'm beginning to appreciate why it's called "chess on ice."
And I love watching the physics of perfectly elastic collisions of objects of equal mass. When you hit a rock square, your stone stops and the other goes flying. Hit it off center and both stones can go flying into the wall and sometimes that's exactly what they want to do.

5. Yep, I'll be flipping channels and get completely drawn in in 20 seconds |
|
I have no idea how its scored or why. But I can't stop watching. It's kind of like a logic puzzle, I think. You WANT to figure it out. But it just ain't happening. I think I admire the people who do it because I would totally not have the patience for it and it would quickly drive me batty.

12. Scoring is pretty straightforward |
|
After both teams have delivered all their rocks, the team with the rock closest to the button is awarded one point for each of its own rocks that is closer than the opponent's closest rock.
Rocks that are not in the house do not score even if no opponent's rock is closer.

Pardon me for thread-crapping, but I really have trouble seeing the appeal. Of course, I don't enjoy watching sports (or in this case "sport") on TV at all.

I'm obsessed with martial arts & boxing.
I'm at the bar for Sunday football games (if I don't have Giants tickets) and for Monday night football.
I'm excited about the Yankees.
I like watching all the other Olympic sports but...
I HATE CURLING.

14. It's very soothing and peaceful. We got hooked on it, too. |
|
So smooth and calming. It's not a frenetic, frantic sport with lots of screaming and shouting. My kids love it.
