It's interesting to see some things gauged in that manner. It makes you realize, sometimes, though, how ill equipped we really are when we're much younger (under the age of 10) to remembering some things. I was 7 when Kennedy was shot, and I recall some details of it (well, it WAS a big news item!), but some of the other things that happened around that same time are more difficult to recall in great detail.

To anyone older than 25, for instance, we remember most things as written news--we did not have an "internet" or personal PCs to read and keep up on news, especially in an instantaneous fashion, so when I was recalling some of those things, it was as the result of newspaper headlines...it was only in the mid 60s that television became a far greater presence than even newspapers, and our first electronic memories were usually of big news as well. Until the advent of the 90s and to now, we were subject to only these major forms of media to catch up on the world of current events. So you can imagine how liberated it is now to be able to judge news media in many different forms, and to take what we need and want from them through a filtered process. At least we can look at the TV news and determine (by our own preferences) what is truth and what is lies; this is significant in many ways, and by far a more preferable filter for our sensibilities.

Two of my crappiest birthday memories: The night before I turned 30 friends of mine were taking me out for dinner. We stopped to pick up another couple and they told us John Lennon had just been shot.
The day I turned 50- "On December 9th the Supreme Court agreed to accept the case of Bush vs Gore and issued a stay to stop the recount then in progress." .....On December 12th, 2000 the Supreme Court issued its ruling and ended the recounts permanently, giving the election to Bush. :(
