OK got my wisdom teeth out. IT WAS A DISASTER. Started @ one
dentist and she couldn't get one out. So she sent me to a surgeon. He had to wait a day before he could do his thing.
When he got started he had a tough time getting the remaining 1 and the other 3 out.

The upper 2 were impacted in my sinus and those I guess were the worse. I even woke up during IV sedation it was so bad.
My sinus had to be stitched back together on both sides. Should I fly next week to work. I'm still swollen and I have tons of pressure in the upper part of my cheeks near my sinus.

1. You poor thing! That sounds absolutely awful!
As far as flying, you'd better ask the surgeon about this, as he would be the best one to advise you about that.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

I'm really glad I never ever had wisdom teeth.

If it were me, I'd see if I could put off the flying for a few weeks.

10. Oral surgeon?
why weren't you sent to an oral surgeon in the first place? Sorry for your pain, but your dentist should have known better?

11. I too, can't believe you weren't sent to an oral surgeon!
That sounds really bad. I had all four of mine done at once - I was out an hour under general anasthesia (since they were embedded into the jaw) and was back at work within 4 days. I am convinced the surgeon's skill made all the difference in what would/could have been a nightmare.

I am so sorry for your pain!

13. I'm just beginning to realise that my dentist is a dumbass fuckup.
I'm angry at her. She knows I'm in my 30's and that the roots were like way down in there.

Can you imagine being in the chair for 90 mins with her using some pliar things and hearing the tooth break and all that jazz then having me get up take an x-ray and directions to another office for an oral surgeon. Right in the middle of the procedure?

Then I get there and the guy can't do anything till the next day. So I have to GO BACK! OMFG I wanted to cry so bad I was so angry and in pain I could have beat the shit out of my original dentist.

I'm not going back. Not to mention she gave me some bogus drugs. The suregon gave me some good shit.

14. OMG!!! I'm having sympathy pains in my phantom wisdom teeth!
Holy shit. Take the drugs!

I can't even imagine. The oral surgeon I went to was obviously a prince in comparison to what you have endured. I had mine done on a Thursday afternoon and was back at work by Monday morning, no pain, virtually no swelling.

16. People over 30 should DEFINITELY go to a surgeon
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 09:12 PM by LostinVA
KIds too. But, my SO is 36 and just had two of hers out in DEcember. The other two are staying in, because it would be too dangerous to takeout. Why. Because they are, like yours were, high in her sinuses! Apparently, now the convention wisdom (giggle) is NOT to take out wisdom teeth in people over 30 or so unless it's either very easy OR keeping them in would lead to a major problem.

Even though one of the SO's teeth had to be DRILLED out, she was in very little pain, had almost zero swelling, and was disappointed she didn't need any of her Vicoden.

Your dentist screwed up BIG time.

24. I'll PM you my addy for the Vicoden just in case.
 If I'm still hurtin and swollen by monday I'm going back in. MAybe they will give me more drugs. I think now the pain is from having 90 mins of jaw cracking pressure on Wed. for part of 1 and 90 mins of jaw cracking pressure on Thursday for the rest. My jaws are really small too. You'd never know cuz I usually talk non stop.

28. I told the SO we could fund a trip with her Vicoden
They gave her a whole bottle. I need to ask my Mom (a nurse) what to do with it -- since it's a controlled substance, so to speak.

Maybe I'll sell it on ebay.....

Mine were all impacted and an oral sugeon took them all out on the same day. I was swollen for a few days, but not in terrible pain.

I can't imagine flying in your condition. I'd check with the surgeon.

Feel better soon. :pals: :grouphug:

18. I'm so sorry. I was really afraid of this.
My wisdom surgery was so bad and I just didn't want to tell you last week.

Hang in there. Wait to see how you feel next week before you fly. Follow the post-surgery instructions carefully. Don't deviate from them and you will heal faster.

Take it easy, rest up and get better soon!

25. My lower ones were wrapped around my lower jaw
I had them pulled anyway by a dentist and not an oral surgeon (long story but my insurance was about to expire and I was being frugal)

I ate demerol like candy for a week--and it didn't help.

Wisdom teeth have got to be right up there with child birth and I have been through both..child birth was worse but not by all that much :(

26. I'm so sorry that this happened to you, xultar.
I had a really difficult time with my wisdom teeth being removed, but it was nothing as compared to what you are going through.

The only good thing that I can say about the entire experience is that I lost 5 pounds and could eat anything that I wanted for a while. I, like you, really started to crave things. I had a list ready for when I could start eating solid food again.

Because you had trouble with your sinuses, please be really careful in reference to the flying.

pressure when move around. I hate that. So I do stuff in quick spirts then hit the bed before I get too dizzy.

34. I am shocked that you were not sent to a surgeon first thing.
I am 21 now, but it wasn't long ago that I had to have some teeth yanked for medical reasons (including a wisdom tooth). They wouldn't even begin to pull it there. When they determined that it was what I needed, they sent me to a surgeon.

I hope that you get better soon!

35. That sounds like hell.
Mine was a breeze compared to that.

My advice: take your time. You're probably even more weak than you think. I remember trying to get up off the couch about 4 days after surgery and almost falling over. The restricted diet takes a lot out of you, and the discomfort is no picnic either.

36. On flying: Be very careful.
I'm a former air force and airline pilot.
Believe me, you do not want a sinus block when flying.
I had one once and it was excruciating.
If you have an air force installation (or air national guard) near you, try and find a flight surgeon who will see you.

Otherwise consult an ENT specialist (I think).
