Anyone familiar with Astoria, Queens (NYC)?
I'm possibly moving to Astoria in a few months. I was wondering if anyone here is from there or has any experience with it.

Basically, I want to know if rents are pricey or not, the relative safety of the area, etc. Can anybody help me out? Thanks.

1. have early 1990's knowledge of Astoria........
Came up from Texas to visit some friends that lived about two blocks from the Astoria Blvd elevated subway stop. The place was too cool to leave, ended up staying for three months.

The friends' rent back then was $600 a month for a two bedroom duplex on a nice street with lots of trees and gardens lining the frontage, lots of curb appeal. They also had a garage and a nice little backyard/patio. This price was very reasonable at this time in history.

Lots of tasty Greek food in the area. Also good diners and pizza.

Never worried about safety or even got spooked, but as with all of New York City, watch where you step.

Excellent subway connection to Manhattan, but be sure you have a coat at the Astoria Blvd station in the winter, the North wind cuts through that station.

3. Most parts of Astoria are safe
At least I always felt safe. Some have a more neighborhood feel than others. The area near the big park is really nice, but you might have a longer walk to the subway. The rents typically are a little cheaper than comparable places in Brooklyn, and the commute to midtown is very easy (depending again on the walk from your apartment). :hi:

5. Most of Astoria is pretty nice
and safe. Astoria is probably the largest Greek community in the country. It also has a large Muslim (I think Egyptian) community. Most of it is within walking distance of subways. Rents are better than Manhattan.

Make sure you try Uncle George's if you move there. Uncle George's is a great Greek restaurant. It's inexpensive and very good.

8. Pretty good area--pricey these days but not as bad as
Manhattan (of course).

You should check Craigslist for rents.

12. I've checked craigslist, too.
I'm going for a 2-bedroom for $1200 or less or a 3-bedroom for $1500 or less.

9. I use to go to a club (Krash) in Astoria.
But it has since moved to Manhattan. I like Astoria.
There's this really nice movie theater across the street from where the club use to be.

Other than that, I don't know much about it.
