OK, Help me relocate...Where is warm, cheap real estate, liberal? |
|
Is there anyplace you know of that meets my short list of cirteria?
I want to relocate but I'm not yet sure where to. First choice would be within the USofA but outside the US is ok too.
I'm currently in Greensboro, NC and I would like to move somewhere with at least the following:
1 Warm Climate
1 Cheap real estate
1 Liberal minded population
Additionally,
2 near water (ocean, lakes, rivers)
2 interesting architecture (no cookie-cutter 'communities')
Any ideas?
Thanks

2. It seems like warm climate and cheap real estate |
|
are often at odds with each other. Especially in more urban areas, which are the places that are more liberal.
But good luck! And let me know if you find one! I've got two of your three but it's cold as hell here. Well one and a half - we're half liberal, half conservative.

I think that your whole list will prove to be difficult.
If you really want to be near the ocean, then that takes care of inexpensive properties.....
And inland, the communities at least here in California are more conservative.......
Sorry, I can't help out here!

It's not gonna be as liberal as where I live (and SF is still too cold for me, but I've grimly accepted the foggy summers and the garage-sized apartments for more money than most see in their lifetimes for all the other advantages) but Tempe is a college town. My ex-boyfriend lives there and loves it.

14. Tempe is not liberal and it takes quite an imagination to call it warm. |
|
It is a college town, so if you're looking for lots of horny drunk young people it's great. Also the price of living here is comparable to LA with the exceptions of real estate (only about 80% of the price of LA) and gas is about $.20 - $.25 less. The cops are, almost without exception, jack booted thugs, and the whole State is owned and run by such repulsive, ignorant, kool-aide drinkers, that you have to go all the way to Texas to find worse.

9. I'm looking with the same criteria... |
|
and I haven't really found anything yet. You can get rural and warm, but liberal then is an issue. The southern Atlantic coast is probably not desirable b/c of the likely increasing hurricane frequency/strength pattern.
Lots of rich assholes have taken over lovely lake areas, too. I'm in western NC (southwest of Asheville) and the property here has skyrocketed; we're looking maybe in eastern Georgia (not too far from Athens - good liberal college community) or somewhere between Columbia, SC (liberal college town, though SC itself is quite red -- didn't used to be) and Charleston. I'd like to be within 2 hours of the coast myself so I can get my 'ocean fix' ... I'm from SoCal originally, and while I often think I'd love to go back, it isn't what I remember from my childhood 30 years ago... if you want to be away from awful gridlock, it's very costly.
Alabama is, of course, quite red but I think Birmingham is supposed to be a cool town. Not a lot of water, though, as far as I can tell. Might be decent driving distance to the Gulf, though.
Architecture - bah. Don't know how/where to find that - but I do understand the desire to get AWAY from horrible look-alike communities. Asheville has some lovely old Art Deco buildings, but Asheville isn't cheap.

10. How about taking your real estate with you? |
|
Like buying a 'bago or a houseboat? Slip rental for the last is reasonable in places like Key West, where land prices are insane. We're seriously considering buying a bus or some other conversion (A shipping container house is high on our list) if I can be persuaded to digitize and part with my ever growing and very massive library.
The problem you're having is that liberal and warm and cheap don't really go together. I don't know why that is, but it seems to be so.

I'm not sure about the politics in Beaufort but it is one of my very favorite cities.
