They're this soft-grip plastic, which is rather nice... but they scratch very easily.

The included wooden holster had a few imperfections when taken out of the box too.

Still, the knives are sharp and it's useful... and I might be overreacting to a few inevitable imperfections. (I'm just glad Haier didn't make the set... they'll trash anything with even one dimple in i ...)

1. Did you pay a lot for the set?
If I paid a lot I would be upset.

I have a set of plastic utility knives from Chicago Cutlery. They don't held up as well as the wooden gripped ones I have from Chicago...,but I didn't pay as much for them so I am okay with it.

7. That's one hell of a knife!
Yeah, I won't be upset. I reckon they'll be gone in a couple of years.

But given the state of my health, I shouldn't be concerned at all. :D

3. You got what you paid for. $30 knives are pretty cheap... I've paid
more than $30 for one knife, but I've had it for umpteen years, kept honed and sharpened.

The soft grip is nice and comfortable though, but it's a shame about the scratches.

4. $30 knives are considered cheap
I have what's considered an inexpensive set, and they were $125.

5. $30 a knife or a set?
$30 a set, yes, very much so.

I have Cutco knives, and I'd be pissed if they got scratched up - no scratches in 15 years of use.

8. For $30 for a set, I'd be surprised if they even kept an edge,
let alone fell apart and are easily scratched up.

Knives are one thing that one should spend the money for a good one, because a good knife is SHITLOADS better than a cheap knife.

9. Heck, I just bought a Henckel's paring knife yesterday for $40
for a three-inch blade.

List price is $50 on it, the store normally sold it for $40, but it was the last one so I got it for $10. YAY!

Real beaut, too.

I love Henckels.

11. Try a restaurant supply store for best prices
I bought my SIL a Dexter Russell paring knife and a chef's knife for $30.

Also bought her one of those magnetic strips to hold them and protect the edge.

10. $30 is a pretty inexpensive set.
Quality sets are in the $500 and up range depending on number of knives and quality.
