In 1972, I was 19 and was voting for the first time ever. That summer, McGovern had dismissed Eagleton as his VP candidate and that infuriated me. So I didn't want to vote for him and no way was I voting for Nixon. I was away at college and voted absentee. My ballot came in the mail and I was thrilled to see a space where I could write in a candidate. So I wrote in Pat Paulsen. My dad was livid. But we laughed about it years later.
