Beef Barley Vegetable soup
10 cups water 2 ½ lbs cubed beef ¾ cup barley 2 carrots, sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 2 medium potatoes, diced 2 medium onions, diced 12 mushrooms, sliced 10 cloves garlic, crushed ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp salt 1/2 tsp Hot Shot ¼ tsp seasoned salt ½ tsp paprika ½ tsp Spike ½ tsp ground mustard 3 inches rosemary stalk leaves 3 inches thyme stalk leaves 6-8 sprigs cilantro ½ cup flour
(Hot Shot and Spike are commercial spice blends)
In a large pot, put water, meat, and vegetables to a boil. Add seasonings. Add barley. Bring back to boil; reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour. In a small bowl strain off some liquid; mix in flour to make a roux. Add roux to soup and mix well. Simmer for ½ hour.

As it turns out I overspiced it with the Hot Shot, and she had to cut in some cream to cool it down. It was good that way though.

Sounds good! I'll be making a black bean and sausage chili on Saturday. I'll posts the results. Maybe we should start a favorite soup/stew/etc. thread some time.
