So I just landed in Salem Oregon for a conference for the next three days. Any lounge lizards spend any time or presently around here? Looking for some live music and a good place to see the local flavor.
Thanks in advance - KJ

1. I've only been through Salem once in recent years..... |
|
So I can't help!
But I didn't want your thread to sink into oblivion......
This will buy you some time!
Hope someone knows something......Perhaps you might try calling the Chamber of Commerce tomorrow?
Good luck! :hi:

I really liked it....
I think, though, maybe things have changed a bit....

but, my interests have changed since then too. I was 4 in 1979....
It seems like a nice town, and being from Montana, it's a pretty comfortable size. Just gotta find my way around a little.... KJ

Still, I know plenty of good ex-cons in Montana - my boss is one, as a matter of fact. KJ

6. You won't really find any fun things in Salem. |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 01:52 AM by Omphaloskepsis
You are really close to Portland. If you can rent a car I would and cruise up I-5 to P-town. I used to spend sun-thu in Salem for work. The only fun thing I ever found to do was to go drinking at the house of a girl that I worked with.
I know of a strip club. That's about all I can think of.

Not so encouraging - and I've had more than enough of strip clubs with college buddies. ugh.
Not so sure that I want to spend an evening drinking beer and listening to music and then try to drive back down from Portland, but I'll keep looking around.... Thanks, KJ

10. Hey, she is double-jointed. |
|
I would just head downtown and start walking. You might find something. I was once offered a job for about 2.5 times what I was making at the time in Salem. With full benefits. I declined the offer.

hehe. Eat at Stanfords. Other than that, I got nothin'. I don't like Salem. But if you have time to drive over to the coast, if you've never been, that would certainly be a must. Pretty drive too, about an hour or so. Pretty once you get past Monmouth and farm country anyway. There's an Indian casino out in that area too, west of Salem.

15. Good Coffee and there is a Great Bar - Thompson Brewery |
|
There is a McMenamins' pub, which if you have never been to one I would check it out. In addition to great beer, each has a very cool character. The Thompson House is a beautiful house that belonged to a former Civil War soldier. This was the first brewery opened in Salem after Prohibition. The outdoor deck is the best place to grab a quick meal and a beer. Even if you don't drink, walk around this very cool house and the food is great. The music scene in Portland is way better than Salem, but Lefty's Blue's Club is a pizza joint with good music on Friday and Saturdays. Don't know if you will still be there on Friday. If you do head to Portland, on the way up I-5 stop at the big outlet mall on your left about 10 miles north of Salem for great tax free shopping.

24. I don't know if you'll have time for this, but |
|
there is a great state park near Salem called Silver Falls. It has several spectacular, you guessed it, waterfalls. Some of them are very accessible -- i.e. you drive up, park, hike a bit, and there you are. Others require a longer hike.
The wine country of McMinnville/Newberg is not far from there and you can go wine tasting if you're into that. Pinot noir is the specialty in that region. Most of the whites are kinda ... ehh. But the pinot is good and Argyle "champagne" is mighty tasty.
Also, if you're a flight buff, there is a very impressive aviation museum in McMinnville called Evergreen Aviation Museum. It holds the Spruce Goose, the gi-normous plane that was Howard Hughes' pet project. It's made of wood, but, interestingly, very little is spruce. The web site is www.sprucegoose.org.
Have a good trip. :hi:
