Rimadyl, do a search on its adverse affects. Here is a link.

http://www.srdogs.com/Pages/rimadylfr.html

Please share this info with your vet immediately. Also, please spread this info far and wide. My vet was unaware of the drug's side effects. My Buffett died in 2004 while on this drug. The maker is Pfizer, a big name drug maker.

And get me a lawyer quick cause my mother had a stroke using Vioxx made by Merck for her arthritis a couple of months ago.

Something has got to be done about drug regulating and warnings in their country.

1. I'm so sorry for the loss of your pet.
My dog has been on Rimadyl for almost 3 years. His vet does a blood work up every year to make sure everything is okay. If it wasn't for Rimadyl we would have had to put him to sleep.

2. I am so glad for a success story!
Is your dog a lab? I am trying to find out if this is something perculiar to the breed or widespread. I am beating my self over the fact that I may have killed him, but I don't know.

4. Our vet switched our golden lab/chow to Deramaxx...
Don't remember if it was for medical reasons or not, tho.

Our eldest dog was on Rimadyl for years, and it extended his life. Like you, we had periodic liver workups to be sure all was OK.

5. I have to agree
My Rosie's been on it for over 4 years and she's made it to 3 years beyond her breed's average life span...and still going strong.

I'm sorry you lost your friend, I really am. But I lost a wonderful little dog giving her aspirin on the vet's recommendation. It caused her to have a stroke. I certainly wouldn't try to keep anyone else from using aspirin because of it, though. I know what a help it can be.

7. My dog is 65 pounds & just turned 16
at Christmas. That is very, very old for a dog that size.

We did the aspirin thing too on the recommendation of our vet. And a friend's vet had told him the same thing. The aspirin just quit working. I went to the vet & asked if there was something else we could try. He suggested we start with Rimadyl first & then go on to others if it didn't work. By the second day our boy was back to bouncing around.

10. Rosie is 123 lbs.
And not fat. She's 13 in a breed that usually lives only about 10 years.

9. Here is a fabulous site for buying
pet supplies including prescription meds.

http://www.petcarerx.com/

The rimadyl is less than half what the vet was charging me & he wasn't ripping me off; he just couldn't get it for as cheap as this place is selling it for.

I've also heard them advertise on Air America.

6. We worried about it too with our old lab
He was on it his last year but he didn't die from it..he'd been fighting tumors for his last 3 years. He'd developed weakness in his back and hips after his 3rd abdominal surgery and he had arthritis. The tumor came back and we had to have him put down.

When we were first given Rimadyl, I read that it had potential adverse reactions and that labs seemed more inclined to die after using it. It really took a lot for the vet to convince me to use it but we finally did after consulting our vet here(we were living in Michigan at that time and were using a group of 6 vets up there) It really made my old boy's last year more comfortable.

I'm so sorry you lost Buffett.

8. Rimadyl can be hard on the kidneys & liver.
Do labs have a history of kidney/liver disease?

Again, I'm so sorry about the loss of your pet. You did the best you could. And there's no way of knowing that it was Rimadyl is there? Though I can understand your desire to make sure people are informed of the potential risks involved.
